Bigot biting the dust

I’m delurking… I joined this site for Kos‘ excellent coverage of the Ukraine war, and kept reading other diaries because they were informative. And generally aligned with my political points of view. I did not comment, though, because I felt intimidated by the knowledge and sophistication around here. I just didn’t have anything to contribute that someone else here wasn’t already saying better.

Until now. But now I have a unique story to share that some here might find interesting. I’m a gay man, living on the outskirts of Ann Arbor, home to the University of Michigan. A very progressive place.

I started to fly a rainbow flag in my driveway during the battle for marriage equality. It’s never been a problem until about two years ago, when my flag and the flag pole were vandalized. I made the police report, replaced the flag, and moved on. Then two month ago, another flag was stolen. I replaced it and got a security camera. And another flag disappeared. But the security system didn’t work as intended, no usable footage. So another upgrade, and another flag.

Yesterday, the flag was gone again, and this time, I have the video!

And some good stills of the perpetrator… Let’s hope he gets caught before he makes the leap from attacking a flag to attacking the owner of the flag. I just wish I knew where all that hatred is coming from. Happy New Year!
