So I’m not here to be depressing about the passage of time; time is, though, a topic that naturally provokes some talk around this time of year.
I’m only going to post a couple of the “who died in 2022” videos here; there are many, of course, and each one is a little different. Some include fewer people but say more about each one. I think this one, from ABC News, has the largest number of people mentioned, just with name, age, and profession. [8:35]
I’m adding this one from Turner Classic Movies, because it has some old-movie people that aren’t in other collections, and gives each person more context. [4:18]
This one is specifically limited to musicians, so it gets around to many that the more general ones leave out. (For “rock stars” only, see here.) [7:23]
If you are not done feeling sad and/or pensive, I will link one from Time, one from CBS Sunday Morning, a longer one from Inside Edition, and for some reason, an additional and completely different one from ABC News.
Of course, there are other ways to note the passage of time. Here is a very interesting time lapse animated map showing every nuclear explosion, 1945-1998. Everyone has their own beep tone and flash color (the initial tones are different, because...), and country tallies are kept at top and bottom (year at top right, grand total at lower right). At the end, they clear the map and run the history of each country extra-fast, one by one. It gets quite musical, and also rather sad that it’s 25 years after the period covered and we’re still needing to worry about psychopath dictators with nukes. [4:49]
Okay, I will quit being so depressing. Here’s a 1974 clip from Australian public TV in which, on a visit to some computer facility, sci-fi author Arthur C. Clarke casually predicts home computers, the internet, and telecommuting (while failing utterly to predict that women exist will participate in any of this public/online life, but, you know, three out of four). [1:27]
Just in case that didn’t make you feel old enough, here’s a clip from a 1976 episode of the BBC’s Blue Peter, the world’s longest-running children’s TV show (the “Blue Peter” is a maritime signal flag). The hosts demonstrate an exciting development, the cordless mobile phone. With, obviously, a shoulder bag and a big ol’ handset with a dial. [6:51]
This is not Time Waits for No One from the Rolling Stones. This is the 1944 one that crops up in Bugs Bunny cartoons. Sung here not by Bugs, but by Helen Forrest. [3:15]
We also have a handful of time-sensitive “short subjects” for today. There are two topical parody songs, but first, before Christmas retreats any further, we have a post from this Dec. 25, “Rescue Beaver Makes Christmas Dam in House”. Lest you think this is some random asshole keeping a beaver in the house, here is the statement from the YouTube page:
This beaver is being raised by wildlife rehabbers after being orphaned as a newborn. Her parents were killed and their dam and lodge destroyed. Beavers are classified as nuisance animals in many US states and can be killed anytime. Beavers need to spend 2 years with their human rehabbers. They need to have lots of opportunities to practice instinctive behaviors. This beaver enjoys playing this game inside the house but lives with the other orphaned beavers outside most of the time. We hope you fall in love! This misunderstood and unique species needs lots of it!
The Christmas tree is pretty funny. [3:11]
As is his habit, Rocky Mountain Mike does not push his parody any longer than he has good material for, much as we might like to hear more of an Elton John song called Elon. (Lyrics on the YT page.) [1:04]
