Here’s my prediction:
The Putin Caucus will use their marginal power to bring governing to a halt. If, by some miracle, McCarthy becomes speaker, part of his deal with them allows any 5 reps to call for a vote of no confidence. (Or maybe just 1, if he caves further.) If someone else (Scalise, say) wins, it won’t be without granting them the same privilege. So what’s to prevent a non-stop Speaker of the House carousel?
This is what they want. Not running the government, but destroying it.
Putting on my swami hat, I’m keeping a close eye on Russian military activity in Ukraine. With the missiles that shoot down Iranian drones (aka “mopeds”) more expensive than the drones themselves, more funding will be requested, even if future mopeds don’t hit target #1. Think about any policy that requires funding (pro tip, they all do) that the Putin Caucus objects to: green energy, Ukraine, any non-millionaire’s rights. Whoopsie! Time for a new Speaker-o-Rama!
Tom Cole just called for a recess, postponing the next round of voting until noon tomorrow. Who knows? Maybe 6 Republicans will self-immolate and vote for Jeffries. (Yes, I’m dreaming.) But hey, could 6 of you call in sick? Take a carefully timed bathroom break?
