Time to deploy these potent weapons. Success is guaranteed after 134 tries!

Please Read This I’m having a great degree of difficulty adding cartoons to this diary. When I do so, it refuses to save the diary on DK. When that happens, the entire diary is “corrupted” and essentially becomes useless. Give me a few minutes and I’ll make some additions to tags, maybe even add a poll, etc. Update , 9:35 pm ET: I have added a poll and made a few other additions.

Trump: The Future is Now

What does the future hold for Donald Trump? From utter political irrelevance to defeat in the 2024 Republican Primaries to being indicted by the US Department of Justice and convicted by a jury of his peers, no matter how one dissects it, the news is bad.

Is Trumpism over? For the MAGA crowd and other dead-enders, it’ll probably linger on for a while even without Trump, but probably not forever.

Trump Faces Grim New Year Associated Press: “He is mired in criminal investigations that could end with indictments. He has been blamed for Republicans’ disappointing performance in the November elections. And while he is now a declared presidential candidate, the six weeks since he announced have been marked by self-inflicted crises. Trump has not held a single campaign event and he barely leaves the confines of his Mar-a-Lago club in Florida.” “Instead of staving off challengers, his potential 2024 rivals appear ever more emboldened. Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, fresh off a resounding reelection victory, increasingly is seen as Trump’s most formidable competition.” “Trump’s subdued campaign announcement has left even former stalwarts wondering whether he is serious about another run for the White House.” Doyle McManus: This is the last column about Donald Trump you’ll get from me. (Maybe.)

George Santos — Trump’s Mini-Me

This scandal is in a new category all by itself.

Rep.-elect George Santos (R-NY) “has pioneered a new category of political scandal,” Politico reports. “The could-be congressman from New York appears to have invented his entire campaign biography, from his Jewish ancestry to his investment banking career and even his charitable contributions.”

A few Republicans have voiced concern and one is even calling for Santos to resign. Meanwhile, recent attempts by some journalists to reach him have not been successful.

The timing of this scandal has been a boon for his many critics.

If You’re Going to Make Up Your Campaign Biography Semafor points out the saga over Rep.-elect George Santos (R-NY) offers a lesson for aspiring members of Congress: “If you’re inevitably going to become embroiled in a baroque scandal about your biography and finances, pray it doesn’t break during the holidays when there’s nothing else happening in Washington and every news national organization in America can throw half its reporters at the story.”
