Throughout England and Scotland, January 1 is First Foot Day or Hogmanay. It’s a day for trying to secure luck for the household for the coming year. And the first person to set foot through the door on Hogmanay symbolizes the luck.

For best results, the first visitor should be a dark-haired stranger. [not a blond Viking raider, in other historical words]

They should bring a gift! Shortbread,

silver coin,

salt,

whiskey.

After that first person, all comers welcomed! Food and good cheer, and singing Auld Lang Syne.
