I love the horizontal rod, for the flag. No air, no wind, on the moon.
Happy New Year!
Okay, that’s out of the way.
Today, I am posting:
Selected headlines, from 1969.
Selected songs, from 1969.
This time, I will give you a link, to my list of headlines that I cherry picked from (okay, I’ll do that now):
en.wikipedia.org/…
This year is notable for Apollo 11's first landing on the moon.
You may feel free, to go to that link, and point out, in your comment, news headlines, that I failed to pick, but you want to include, in this discussion.
I will cherry pick, very few headlines.
For the hit songs, I decided to do that part differently, this week. Rather than giving you a link to the Billboard top 100 songs of 1969, I will simply type out, with my fingers, every single title and artist from the list. That way, for any songs for which I give you that title and artist, but fail to post the YouTube video, if you want to post it, in your comment, no need to go look at the link. Simply go to YouTube, and search for the song. The title and artist, are right in front of you, in this diary.
Here we go, with news headlines:
February 9 – The Boeing 747 "jumbo jet" is flown for the first time, taking off from the Boeing airfield at Everett, Washington.
Now, in 2023, the new jumbo jet, is the Boeing 777.
March 2 In Toulouse, France the first Concorde test flight is conducted.
I recall that at that time, the term, SST, or, supersonic transport, was the other name, for the Concorde.
March 20 — John Lennon and Yoko Ono are married at Gibraltar, and proceed to their honeymoon "Bed-In" for peace in Amsterdam.
Not really big news, but, so unusual, it got a lot of attention.
Science fiction, in medical treatments, coming true.
Protesting the war in Vietnam.
So, Nixon was responding to John Lennon?
Did the gay bashers mess around and find out?
Science fiction became real.
Gotta watch out for those Irish Catholics. Like Joe Biden.
Peace, love, and Rock n Roll.
August 17 – Category 5 Hurricane Camille hits the Mississippi coast, killing 248 people and causing US$1.5 billion in damage (1969 USD).
I did not post any other natural disaster, but this one sounded very familiar, and had a high body count.
Lt. Calley. My Lai. Those names are stuck in my head, for sure.
October 29 – The first message is sent over ARPANET, the forerunner of the internet.
Look out! Here comes the internet!
Okay, we just kept on sending folks to the Moon. Why not?
December 1 – Vietnam War: The first draft lottery in the United States since World War II is held. September 14 is the first of the 366 days of the year selected, meaning that anyone born on September 14 in the years from 1944 to 1951 would be the first to be summoned.
Okay, I was only 13 at the time, but I started getting nervous.
Now, for the music:
There was a tie, for number 100:
Let Me, by Paul Revere and the Raiders
Sweet Cream Ladies, by The Box Tops
Number 99:
Okay, in the groove now. Feels like number one. MMmmm.
Number 98:
Soul Deep, by The Box Tops
Number 97:
My Whole World Ended, by David Ruffin
Number 96:
I do not like sad songs, but this one is so damned fine, I just love it!
Number 95:
Mr. Sun, Mr. Moon, by Paul Revere & the Raiders
Number 94:
Love Me Tonight, by Tom Jones
Number 93:
Oh Happy Day, by Edwin Hawkins Singers
Number 92:
I do not recall hearing this one, back in the sixties. However, it is so smooth, so upbeat, such a happy song. Makes me feel good. I like feeling good.
Number 91:
Your Good Thing, by Lou Rawls
Number 90:
Nice, smooth, instrumental. I never saw the movie. You can tell me, in the comments, all about the movie. Or, was this song even from a movie?
Number 89:
I like the dance video included here. Nice.
Number 88:
That song is in a class, all by itself. Droning beat, high notes. Yes.
Number 87:
Such a classic Motown hit.
Number 86:
Ramblin’ Gamblin’ Man, by Bob Seger System
Number 85:
Some of my favorite lyrics:
www.google.com/…
He say, "one and one and one is three"
Got to be good looking 'cause he's so hard to see
That just makes me chuckle, inside, every time.
Number 84:
This Girl is a Woman Now, by Gary Puckett & The Union Gap
Number 83:
This feels like the most magical song the Beatles ever did. Magical.
Number 82:
Oh, What a Night, by The Dells
Number 81:
Great, fun, sixties pop song.
Number 80:
So mellow, so nice. Mood music I can play, over and over.
Number 79:
www.lyrics.com/...
People walking up to ya Singing glory Hallelujah And they're tryin' to sock it to you in the name of the Lord They're gonna teach you how to meditate Read your horoscope, cheat your fate
I never did like the whole idea of street preachers, meditation, or astrology, so I always liked those lyrics.
Number 78:
Ruby, Don’t Take Your Love to Town, by Kenny Rogers and The First Edition
Number 77:
Polk Salad Annie, by Tony Joe White
Number 76:
Such a nice, happy song.
Number 75:
The Chokin’ Kind, by Joe Simon

Twenty-Five Miles, by Edwin Starr
Number 68:
Mother Popcorn, by James Brown
Number 67:
Indian Giver, by 1910 Fruitgum Company
Number 66:
Black Pearl, by Checkmates, Ltd
Number 65:
That made me cry. I don’t think it ever got very high on the charts, or got a lot of airplay on the radio, but, it made me cry. Solid.
Number 64:
This is truly one of the best songs, in all of pop music. So mellow, so right.
Number 63:
This is why I am doing this series of music diaries. That melody, that song, is just as much of an old friend, as Twinkle, Twinkle, but, I never did memorize that title, as the title to that melody. Now, if I want to chill, as they say, I can come back to this diary, and chill, playing this song, over and over.
Number 62:
Can I Change My Mind, by Tyrone Davis
Number 61:
That is, truly, one of the best of the fun, novelty songs.
Number 60:
I’m Gonna Make You Mine, by Lou Christie
Number 59:
So powerful, so smooth. I cannot get enough of that song. Makes me want to listen to another of his hits, The Wichita Lineman.
Number 58:
Book ‘em, Danno!
Number 57:
Runaway Child, Running Wild, by The Temptations
Number 56:
I remember this song, but my brain placed it in the fifties, since it sounds like a fifties style song. Not 1969.
Number 55:
She had such a great voice. I like the sound of her voice, hitting high notes, better than most of the pop singers.
Number 54:
Okay, that made me cry, because the lyrics speak of items, things, that remind a person of past love. Since my first wife died, in 2008, and my second wife died, in March of 2022, I have so many items, so many things, so many photographs, that I have been looking at, as I organize everything, into bankers boxes.
Number 53:
I do not like the fairy tale of Atlantis, but, the song is so pretty, so smooth. Fun.
Number 52:
Such a smooth song of seduction. Such a classic.
Number 51:
What else can I be, but what I am?
Number 50:
So, upbeat, so cheerful! “Every day’s a new day...” Nice.
Number 49:
Was he trying to sound like Frank Sinatra? “I’m gonna love you, ‘til the stars fall from the sky.”
Number 48:
Very familiar hit song. But, I do not think anyone should wait a million years for anyone else.
Number 47:
Do Your Thing, by Charles Wright & the Watts 103rd Street Rhythm Band
Number 46:
Love your neighbor, as yourself.
Number 45:
Musically, I like everything about this song. The first 30 seconds, are enough, to make me feel great. So well written, so well done. And, upbeat, cheerful mood, as well.
Number 44:
Okay, the keyboard, the bass guitar, the vocals, yes. Truly fine music.
Number 43:
Such a classic hippie song.
Number 42:
Such a smooth, classic, love song. Nice.
Number 41:
Little Woman, by Bobby Sherman
Number 40:
“Bill,” could also be the title to this song. So well done, so full of passion.
Number 39:
Ahhh, such a nice, “peace and love” hippie song.
Number 38:
Only the Strong Survive, by Jerry Butler
Number 37:
I do not remember this one, from back in the olden days, but, it’s well done, so I posted it.
Number 36:
Such a goofy, silly song. But, did you know, that in the real world, the mother of Obama, was actually named, Stanley Ann Dunham. Look it up. A girl named Stanley.
Number 35:
Such a sad song, and such a classic.
Number 34:
Baby It’s You, by Smith
Number 33:
So smooth, so mellow, but with a loud part, in the middle, to express the passion, of the song.
Number 32:
“La la la, la la la, la la la, la la la la.”
Great lyrics!
Number 31:
Classic CCR. I never listened closely to the lyrics. Maybe I will, some day.
Number 30:
Turn the volume down, and it’s elevator music.
Number 29:
Going in Circles, by The Friends of Distinction
Number 28:
Baby, I Love You, by Andy Kim
Number 27:
What goes up, must come down. And this song, must be posted here.
Number 26:
Silly, corny, science fiction speculation. But, it was on the radio, all the time, so, here it is.
Number 25:
“Jo Jo left his home in Tuscon, Arizona, for some California grass.” Outstanding instrumental work, in this song. Outstanding.
Number 24:
Nice thing about this song, there is nothing about relationship disasters, which can make me sad, just natural disasters, which do not trigger me. Nice!
Number 23:
Happy, upbeat, easy listening.
Number 22:
Keyboard, trumpet, guitar, voice, yes! One of the best, easy on the ear songs.
Number 21:
It’s Your Thing, by The Isley Brothers
Number 20:
What Does It Take (To Win Your Love), by Jr. Walker & The All Stars
Number 19:
“Left a good job in the city, workin’ for the man, every night and day.”
Number 18:
The main part of this song, is the guitar melody. Elvis sings along, just to round out the song.
Number 17:
Seems to me, anyone who wants to learn how to sing well, even while singing lots of lyrics, very fast, should use this song. Seems to me.
Number 16:
www.google.com/…
If you hear the song I sing
You will understand, listen
You hold the key to love and fear
All in your trembling hand
Just one key unlocks them both
It's there at your command
Number 15:
A grand and wonderful show tune.
Number 14:
Priorities: academics, or my baby? No contest.
Number 13:
“I’m hairy noon and nighty night night!”
Number 12:
Bongo drums, two guitars, tambourine. Oh, and singing. “A new day is dawning. People are changing.”
Number 11:
Three Dog Night was one of the most powerful bands, of that era. Powerful.
Number 10:
That quavering guitar, is so much fun, and the vocals are so clean. So nice.
Number 9:
Sort of like a fifties Motown song. Nice.
Number 8:
I’ll Never Fall in Love Again, by Tom Jones
Number 7:
Fun little carefree song.
Number 6:
Such a fun bubble gum song. I like the string section. (I play violin, a little, so I always respect the strings.)
Number 5:
“Different strokes, for different folks.”
Number 4:
Okay, this is the first time I looked at the lyrics for this song. More crazy than I thought.
Number 3:
I do not remember this one, from the olden days, but, it’s lively, and well done, so I posted it.
Number 2:
The opening vocals are so incredibly beautiful! But, if that was the dawning of the age of Aquarius, are we now in the middle of the age of Aquarius, or is it over?
Number 1:
A cartoon band, hit number one, for the year! Why not?
Well, okay, your turn. You may simply leave a comment, stating that you agree, absolutely, with all my decisions, (and wish me a Happy New Year) or, you may post more music, in your comment. You may post music, from other years. I can’t stop you!
Hugs!
And Happy New Year!
