I really liked this piece, so I'm sharing it. To me, it's a lovely, positive approach to bringing in the new year. It's short, about 1/2 page; after the translation I’ve included the original Spanish version.
I've translated it on my own. There are many ways to translate things, and some words are hard to find the right equivalent for the occasion (e.g., estrenar). If your Spanish is better than mine, you may find that you wish I'd done some things differently. (I’m very fluent, but not a native speaker.) There is probably a professional English translation of it out there somewhere; I didn’t look for it. I find translating this kind of thing a good way for me to reflect further on the content of it, from the perspective of both languages.
For those who don't know him, Galeano (1940-2015) was a contemporary writer from Uruguay: passionate, political, feminist, anti-imperialist, original. Many of his pieces are what I might call lyrical essays. His Memory of Fire is an astonishing 3-volume undertaking that presents the history of Latin America in short vignettes -- poetic, passionate, insightful and infuriating. All of the vignettes are backed up by historical records. (This piece is not from Memory of Fire.)
If you do read the New Year piece, I'd be interested to hear your thoughts.
Feliz año nuevo,
Joel
