Welcome to the January 1st edition of Street Prophets Coffee Hour, the place where religion and politics meet up with art, nature, food, and life. Come in, have a cuppa and a cookie (or three!), and join us.

I hope everyone was able to celebrate the new year’s advent in a way that gave you joy. I don’t even try to stay up until midnight, and I’m not sure I ever did, at least not as a regular thing. I’m on team early-to-bed-early-to-rise, by nature rather than in pursuit of any perceived virtue, and I can sleep soundly enough to sleep through the fireworks outside.

I heard from some of my/our friends around the world as New Year 2023 rang in in their areas. Mopshell (remember her?) sent greetings from Australia.

Jenny in Glasgow posted a very long video about the holiday festivities in history, ending with Hogmanay; a link to New Year’s Day history; and a New Year’s Day greeting featuring Scottish musicians.

Until very recently, meaning within my lifetime, Hogmanay was a bigger event in many parts of Scotland than was Christmas. First Footing was taken seriously then. It was also the origins of ‘guising’, short for disguising, more of a Hogmanay tradition than a Hallowe’en one there.
