My Meta for 2023 -- A Faster Refresh Trending List [1]

Today's trending list, which is pretty "new"!

Disclaimer: I have no standing or credibility to write a site management suggestion. I’m a spastic diarist (some good, some bad, many mediocre, lots of long gaps between), and an infrequent recommender and commenter (mostly because I can’t login on my ancient phone). I don’t donate nearly as much as I should. I’m a pretty mediocre Democrat too, with my progressive voting mostly offset by a lack of activism. I’ve been a non-partisan staffer, a centrist dupe, and then a corporate stooge in my undistinguished career. Plus I use parentheses too much (!)

But despite all that, I’d like to make an algorithm suggestion: Is it possible to tweak the Trending Stories list to de-emphasize Trending diaries after 24 hours or so, and thus make room for more Community diaries to show up on the list in the first place? Given how frequently I (and I presume many others) check the site these days, particularly regarding the phenomenal Covid and Ukraine coverage, I just it would be helpful to refresh the Trending list a little more quickly. I’ve seen quite a few great diaries down in the basement (More Community Stories) toward the bottom of the home page when I have a chance to scroll that far down, but I think I’ve missed many more.
