A secret: I’ve never really liked going out and participating in New Year’s Eve festivities.
I’ve only done the whole “routine” maybe two or three times. Getting all gussied up to arrive at a bar or club or other type of establishment only to find exorbitant cover charges, overpriced food and drinks. Throngs of so many people that it’s often difficult to move around.
Even back in my drinking days, I didn’t like the NYE scene.
I do like going to small gatherings of friends and/or family where the music is cranked up and everyone is having a good time. I also like being alone at home engaging in reflection without the countdown on various TV channels. Plenty of times, I’ve fallen asleep before the new year arrived.
Oh, and there usually somewhat of a deep-clean of the house involved for a few hours, at least.
Sometimes, I talk to my mother (who’s also at home) and we’ve celebrated the beginning of the New Year twice because we live in different time zones.
Tomorrow...because Michigan plays TCU in the College Football Playoff during my regular work hours, I’ll be going to work early and, strangely enough, going out to a local bar in order to watch the game. After the end of that game, I have to return home and work because I have to do APR for Sunday morning. I’ll probably be able to do a copule of hours of deep-cleaning and laundry. As the clock approaches midnight, I may call my mother. My work will probably take me past midnight and into the new year before I finish. And then off to sleep...
And I wake up to another new year.
