I trimmed off all the Street Prophets Friday labels and the (photo diary) note tagged onto the end of many of the titles. The only one not published under the Street Prophets Friday label was Protests in Prague and is to date my most popular diary here on Daily Kos. I look forward to wandering back through my year of posts and refreshing a few memories. If I have any regrets, it's that I didn't get around to posting anything from my trip to London with Mrs the Werelynx to attend a wedding. There was just too much to share from Dačice. Perhaps I'll sneak a few highlights into a quiet moment in January.
I'm writing this from a cozy corner of the big room in the family's place out in the country. We've got a few Christmas cookies left. I got a new laptop under the tree. It doesn't like communicating with my old digital camera, but I got it kinda talking to my phone. The pictures I took of our home decorations and traditional socializing on the 24th will have to wait, as will my New Year's card for 2023. I'm not nearly finished. I should have gotten an earlier start, but getting it done is slow going with my facial nerve thing making my eyes water. I'm doing another linocut. Heh, more on linocuts and facial nerve paralysis on the first and last links of my list. And to give you a bit of a health update, I can now wiggle my right eyebrow. My surprised face is making a comeback. The smile is still wonky, but any progress is to be celebrated. I shall raise a cup of milk to toast my eyebrow. And yes, everything was wrong with that last sentence.
Today was a lovely day spent with friends from a town nearby. Mrs the Werelynx, #1 Son and I drove down and went for a walk around Hořice and then to lunch at a local brewery.
We visited the cemetery whose monumental gateway always makes me take a moment to stop and gaze.
The town is known for quality sandstone and a school of sculpture. The graveyard has a collection of sculpted grave markers equaled by only a few sites in the world.
We paid our respects at the grave of one of our friends and left by that same gorgeous gate, here seen from the back.
We walked through a section of sculpture park that I’d never visited before.
I remember this one was by a sculptor from Finland. I resisted the temptation to climb up the steps and sit in the chair.
Fairly warm, partly sunny, and not a hint of snow anywhere.
A small sandstone quarry in the woods
Walking back into town, we passed the old factory owner's mansion, now being beautifully restored. For so many years we’d gone past this ruin and watched the roof slowly cave in. Now, there’s a new roof and the facade is looking pristine. The massive wall is new; it was all wrought iron with just a few pillars before.
The brewery is found in a cluster of preserved industrial era buildings.
Of course the buildings are built from the local sandstone.
The goulash and beer was delicious.
The Christmas tree and nativity scene on the main square
I'm looking forward to another year of adventures.
Thanks for stopping by.
This is an open thread.
