Wow. Some of the big boys took some nasty spills this year. Some that had to hurt.
Elon, the talented engineer, took most of the year figuring out that the number of right wing tweeters who drive EVs is not especially large. But he owns that segment solidly now. Let’s hope his “success” doesn’t spread to SpaceX. Maybe he should have stayed with that roadster he launched.
Cryptocurrencies, lauded for not being backed by central banks, collapsed because they had no central banks backing them.
Racists, antisemites, and stolen documents owned the year at Mar-a-Lago. Fox put the focus on more important things and devoted their coverage to Hunter’s laptop.
Russia’s 3-day invasion of Ukraine passed its 300th day, pretty much on schedule. DailyKos coverage was spectacular, but those Russian tanks sure underdelivered. No one was quite sure where the Russian Air Force went. They had one at some point. High level Russians began descending rapidly and stopping suddenly, and a massive careless smoking issue arose. TFG cited the genius of the operation, and Tucker Carlson complained about the US taking the wrong side. Matt Gaetz, with his formidable and slightly underage forehead, agreed. Somehow Viktor Orban wound up at CPAC.
Moskva, safely steaming outside Ukrainian missile range, was sunk by Ukranian missiles. The Crimean Bridge took a hit. Putin stayed safe through it all though, sitting at the far end of impossibly immense tables.
Our current and former presidents, with one exception, came together in memory of the 9/11 attacks. That other guy golfed with the Saudis. Fox put the focus on more important things and devoted their coverage to Hunter’s laptop.
Southwest Airlines went Chernobyl just in time for the holidays. Even the regulators began to sit up and take notice. There was something about not being sure where all the planes, crews and luggage wound up. Oh, and something about fuel.
There were 12 skinned knees at the Supreme Court, where some important documents were misplaced. The 9th Amendment hasn’t been seen for a while. Trump said it wasn’t his fault. He only took the 5th. Don’t worry about the 2nd though...It’ll be just fine.
The Red Wave, advertised for many months, closed just before opening night. DJT claimed credit for the success but remained mostly out of view. Kari Lake remained slightly out of focus.
Our very own Lauren Boebert certainly counts as a skinned knee. She managed to barely squeak out a win in a safe red district, giving us all hope for a few days. So close. There are lessons to learn here. Always remember to verify that there’s a round in the chamber before attempting to discharge your next thought.
Kevin McCarthy continues to push his speakership up the hill each day, only to have it roll back down at night. Sad!
TFG’s countenance alternated between burnt umber and ashen, depending on the golf schedule. Some guy in Florida threatened to spoil his renomination by acclamation. Also sad!
It would be cool if this were all snark. It sounds that way, but we actually lived this stuff.
There were some really good things, too.
Amongst all the noise, Biden had a pretty darn good year, and the D congress delivered some impressive legislation.
The Artemis 1 mission was sweet. And the JWST is returning spectacular images and data. Actually overdelivering on its huge promises. We can see many billions of years back in time. Close to the big bang, and even before Charles Grassley’s first term.
MotoCo regretted ever having had anything to do with the GOP and signed up for DailyKos. It’s pretty addictive.
Cheers, all. Happy 2023.
