Not this year's tree

Due to my watching documentaries about nature on PBS, I have started to rethink live Christmas trees in my future. I am sad about what I can’t unlearn or ignore. You may find this silly. I understand, it is a new thought to me but it has been building.

As you can see by Itzl's concerned look, this group is for us to check in at to let people know we are alive, doing OK, and not affected by such things as heat, blizzards, floods, wild fires, hurricanes, tornadoes, power outages, or other such things that could keep us off DKos. If you're not here, or anywhere else on DKos, and there are adverse conditions in your area (floods, heatwaves, hurricanes, etc.), we are going to check up on you. If you are going to be away from your computer for a day or a week, let us know here. We care!

IAN is a great group to join, and a good place to learn to write diaries. Drop one of us a PM to be added to the Itzl Alert Network anytime! We all share the publishing duties, and we welcome everyone who reads IAN to write diaries for the group! Every member is an editor, so anyone can take a turn when they have something to say, photos and music to share, a cause to promote or news!

I never thought of trees as being sentient, like animals. Then, new science discovered how trees are connected underground through a vast system of fungus and how they communicate to each other. There has been some hint that they may be able to see, that they perceive pressure but have no pain receptors so feel no pain when cut down. I have come to wonder if they send alarm to one another of impending changes, if they suffer from fear.

But the biggest worry I have is the slow death of the cut tree. I kept it watered so it did not become just a lot of dry tinder. Every time I watered it, it sent out a lovely fresh pine smell and the tips perked up and grew a little. The thoughts have overwhelmed me.

I know that I am over sensitive right now, that the year of illness that has not been resolved is shadowing every thing I do or think. But I do not want another cut tree to celebrate the changes in the seasons. My family will give me grief about it but I will keep it to myself until the proper time. An artificial tree will be easier to decorate, will not drop needles, will not need water, and will not die in my living room.
