I’m not going to quote from these articles because you need to read them in full. They’re from The Bulletin For Atomic Scientists. One written by the editor in chief, the other by a former principal research physicist at the Princeton Plasma Physics Lab. They’ve both been linked to on here before.
The summary is simple: The recent fusion experiment had nothing to do with producing electricity, no one knows when we’ll be able to do that. Even when we can, assuming that’s possible, it may be too expensive to matter anyway.

Fusion reactors: Not what they’re cracked up to be
Governments will continue to pour massive amounts of borrowed billions into these too big to fail experiments because… why not! Fusion is sexy!
