It’s a celebration of generosity and benevolence. It originated in Britain, and is still celebrated in the Commonwealth countries. From Victorian times it meant the day off for servants, and a gift of food and coin.

It coincides with the feast of Saint Stephen, when the story of Good King Wenceslas takes place, and the sharing of special food is a strong feature.

In modern times, this may take the form of an open house buffet for all comers,

or gift boxes to the less fortunate.

Volunteer work is a great way to commemorate the day.
