Morning Open Thread: Music By Which to Open Your Presents--Tchaikovsky's The Nutcracker [1]

Good morning Crew and a merry Christmas to all.

I hope no one minds but I chose the music to entire Nutcracker ballet today, all two and a half hours of it. I know, I said here I hate Christmas carols. I do, but I posted this happy piece for people who might like a bit of background music by which to open their presents. Even if you’re not doing gifts this morning it’s still nice to have breakfast to. I hope you enjoy it, at least for a little while.

The plot: The ballet takes place over Christmas. On Christmas Eve, a little girl named Clara receives a gift from her godfather: a beautiful Nutcracker. Except her bratty brother breaks her prized nutcracker’s jaw. All is not lost, however—her godfather, a skilled watch and toy maker, magically fixes it.

Later, after all the guests have left, Clara goes back to check on her nutcracker. She falls asleep with him in her arms. As the clock strikes midnight, she had a dream that her nutcracker and the rest of the toys fight a battle against the fierce Mouse King and his army of mice. Just as she thinks her nutcracker and his army is going to lose Clara throws her slipper at the Mouse King. She knocks him out. The mice leave carrying their leader.

With the Mouse King’s defeat, the Nutcracker turns into a Prince and takes Clara on a long journey to meet the Sugar Plum Fairy. After much entertainment, the Nutcracker and Sugar Plum Fairy dance together.

Clara awakens on Christmas morning under her family’s tree with her beloved nutcracker in her hands.
