Seed faith? It's works, just not in the way that grifting Televangelists want you to believe. [1]

You see them on infomercials, which are televised in the wee hours of the night on weekends. “Send me money, and in return God will make you filthy rich, just like me”, they say. They tell you that you are planting a seed for a prosperous future. This kind of heresy has made them rich with mansions and jet planes, while it has caused others to remain where they are financially, while losing their faith because God didn’t do as the heretical preacher promised. They didn’t become rich, they were not cured of cancer or any other disease, and they didn’t get any free stuff from their transaction.
However, there is an aspect of what these greedy grifters call seed faith in which you do receive something back, and I have received it myself. Recently, my wife was diagnosed with kidney cancer, my car went out on me, and it cost me 2283 dollars right now just to get it running again, I am still looked at 1100 bucks in the near future, and I haven’t been able to work at my day job in 3 weeks because my car was in the shop during that time and buses don’t run to where I work. As a local musician, I could not make any money play gigs because my car was in the shop, so a substitute filled in for those. In addition, I had a nice Christmas gig lined up for today, but that was cancelled due to the cold weather. So you could say that I am a bit down on my luck, although the wolf will not be arriving at our door any time soon. Things are going to be tight for a while, but we still have a roof over our heads, we are not going hungry, and we are still paying our bills.
After picking my car up yesterday, my boss at my day job called me today and asked me to come in, so I drove to the shop to meet him. When I got there, he gave me a 400 dollar Christmas bonus, and told me that I am on vacation until the first of January. That was appreciated. On the way back home, I saw a homeless guy panhandling at a light under a bridge, who was missing a leg, looked hungry, and in his eyes was despair. I gave him 20 bucks.
Is my wife going to be cured of cancer because of my gift to the homeless guy? Yes, but not because I gave the guy money. The doctors will take care of that. Her prognosis is actually quite good, and our Medicare insurance will take care of almost all of the bill. Will I become rich? Not likely. Will I ever get to live in a mansion and fly a jet plane? Nope. Will my car end up fixing itself? Only in my wildest dreams. So what did I receive for what I gave? When I saw the smile on the homeless guy’s face and the tears of joy in his eyes, I received joy myself. This is what I received for the seed I planted.
I have no idea of what awaits me in the afterlife, but I do know from reading Matthew Chapter 25 that whatever we do for the “least of these”, we have done for him. This was the message that Christianity sent to the world, and this message has been perverted by a right wing “prosperity evangelism” which teaches us that greed is good, that religion should be spread from the barrel of a gun, that only their kind of people will be going to heaven, and that their so-called “Church” should marry the government and control it, as well as all who live under that government. What they preach is heresy, as well as the spirit of an Antichrist. I’m no judge but, in my honest opinion, they are going to receive a very unpleasant surprise when they stand before their maker. As for myself, I am happy, and that’s all I really need in life.
Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukkah, Happy Kwanzaa, or if you are an atheist or agnostic, I wish for you whatever makes you happy.
