Dinner’s at 5:00 today. All I have to do is cook the duck. My other contributions are already at my daughter’s place.
As you can see by Itzl's concerned look, this group is for us to check in at to let people know we are alive, doing OK, and not affected by such things as heat, blizzards, floods, wild fires, hurricanes, tornadoes, power outages, or other such things that could keep us off DKos. It's also so we can find other Kossacks nearby for in-person checks when other methods of communication fail - a buddy system. Members come here to check in. If you're not here, or anywhere else on DKos, and there are adverse conditions in your area (floods, heatwaves, hurricanes, etc.), we and your buddy are going to check up on you. If you are going to be away from your computer for a day or a week, let us know here. We care! IAN is a great group to join, and a good place to learn to write diaries. Drop one of us a PM to be added to the Itzl Alert Network anytime! We all share the publishing duties, and we welcome everyone who reads IAN to write diaries for the group! Every member is an editor, so anyone can take a turn when they have something to say, photos and music to share, a cause to promote or news!

I think this has been mentioned elsewhere on the site, but Merriam-Webster’s word of the year for 2022 is ‘gaslighting’.
Evidence indicates it was a drought that sent Attila against the Roman Empire.
An article on smart bandages.
They’re investigating what killed the Black Prince in England. Likely not the dysentary that has been believed.
Eighteen of the most interesting food lawsuits in history.
Humans have likely been navigating seas for half a million years more or less.
Historic places, then and now.
The original Mediterranean diet.
Odd facts somebody learned in 2022. Fifty-two of them.
A third facial reconstruction of Saint Anthony of Padua.
The Oxford word of the year for 2022 is ‘goblin mode’.
What medieval manuscripts show about cats in the Middle Ages.
A tattoo removal studio in London will get rid of your Kanye West tattoos for free.

I had arranged with my daughter to do what Christmas grocery shopping I needed to do last Thursday, and visit Sara R and winglion as well. She ended up insisting that I do it all on Wednesday because of the miserable weather forecast for Thursday (21F projected high for the day, not likely to precipitate, but if it does, it will be snow). I wanted Thursday because the Reed sisters didn’t have any appointments and I might actually be able to get a real visit in. Didn’t happen.
I did the shopping on Wednesday, and had just pulled up next to Catnip Manor as my last stop of the day when my cellphone rang. It was my daughter. The owner of the place her ex works had sold it without telling any of the employees and had, apparently, also taken all the booze and available cash and done a bunk. The ex, as head cook, was trying to sort things out. Could I take the kids to their 1:30 dentist appointments?
Not happy, me; but nobody to blame for it who was available to be ranted at. I took the kids to the dentist.
I also ended up baking the Trader Joe’s mini croissants that I had bought for Christmas dinner since it didn’t occur to me that my grandkids wouldn’t notice they had to be frozen.

I didn’t see any of the snow when it was coming down, but we didn’t get any sleet in my neighborhood — though I hear it was in plentiful supply elsewhere around town.
It is now Saturday, and it’s started to rain. It is above freezing and projected to stay there for at least a week. The rain that is also projected is normal for the time of year.

Sara R and winglion had a Christmas present for me when I dropped by on Wednesday. It was a throw printed with frogs as samurai and other Japanese warriors, and sumo wrestlers. I love it. It also helped me get through the couple of really cold nights this past week.
When I called to thank them, I asked them if I had ever mentioned my Lone Wolf and Cub collections (the complete Dark Horse Comics English translation, and all 45 issues of a much earlier attempt at translation by a different company). No, I hadn’t. Or that I had taken a book on Japanese swords with me to read at the hospital when my first was born? No, I hadn’t.
They were delighted that they managed to get it just right.

I got a Barnes & Noble card from the offspring, and a jigsaw puzzle that is, apparently, an escape room exercise as well. I’m going to have to clear off the dining table.

Love you guys!
