Curiosity killed the cat and satisfaction brought him back

I read from wonderful DK GNR about the new cars powered by electricity for the Postal Office. This is great of course. And then I got curious about the sources of electrical power in the USA. According to statistics (google), 60% of electrical power comes from coal. Then, when trying to find the rest of the sources, I got 20% nuclear and 20% renewables. I went to find out about hydroelectric power, it said 17%, then wind 9.2%. It does not add up. Maybe one of you can find better data. But that is beyond my point. If, for example 100% of electric cars are powered by electricity coming from coal plants, what is the advantage? Even then, I can see the advantage of having cars not spewing climate changing gases into the atmosphere. But how about the coal power plants? Does it mean that instead of the release of those harmful gases in many places, they would be release in only the site of the coal plant? But it will still go into the atmosphere, would it not? Yes, we should go to electric cars but if we do not change the source of electricity, coal, what have we really changed?

My diary does not mean that I know with certainty what the hell I am talking about. When I write to DK it is mainly to learn from you all. I do not feel bad about being ignorant in so many subjects. My field is Physical Chemistry not Engineering. But I love engineers. I learned a lot of form them at NASA and they learn some about molecules from me. That is what DK is, teamwork and exchange of ideas and learning from each other. And laughing and venting (I love ShowerCap by the way, missed him today).

OK, I will let you go. I wish you all a great end of the year and a great New Year.
