Christmas --- the Birth of the World's First Socialist [1]

Everywhere in the country, churches celebrate Christmas with carols about Baby Jesus, born in a manger — However, many churches seem to forget an important fact. Baby Jesus grew up. As an adult — Jesus was the World's First Socialist.

If you don't believe me — look at the record in the Four Gospels.

Jesus spent most of his ministry healing the sick. He healed the so-called “unclean” — or lepers. He ignored pre-existing conditions, like “the sins of the father.” He even made a special trip to heal a mentally-ill outcast dwelling in a graveyard. Never once did Jesus ask about health insurance, Medicaid, or Medicare Advantage. Jesus practiced “Socialized medicine.”

Jesus harbored nothing but contempt for the billionaires of his day and age. He told one billionaire to “sell all you have and give to the poor.” In other words, Jesus supported the re-distribution of wealth. He told the parable of Lazarus and Dives to illustrate the cruelty, ignorance, and greed of the wealthy. Today's millionaires and billionaires, such as Elon Musk, Jeff Bezos, Mitch McConnell, Sam Bankmen-Fried, Leonard Leo, and the corrupt conservative judges on SCOTUS, will spend eternity in the same place as Dives. Jesus’ attitude toward the rich and powerful proves that Jesus was a Socialist.

In addition to his contempt for the wealthy, Jesus denounced the established religious authorities of his day and age. Were I to convert those words into a 21st Century cultural context, Jesus’ attacks would be unprintable. The 21st century version of the established religious authorities whom Jesus denounced would include wealthy mega-church evangelical preachers, who peddle homophobia, bigotry, and ignorance like rock cocaine; much of the Roman Catholic hierachy, who maintain a deafening silence in the face of increasing Fascism; and certainly, Patriarch Kirill of the Russian Orthodox Church, who sanctifies war crimes and genocide, and whose wardrobe of elaborate clerical outfits would make any American drag queen green with envy. And, speaking of drag queens — let's remember Jesus never denounced homosexuals -— NOT even ONCE.

In addition to his denunciations of God-fraud preachers, Jesus had no use for weapons. In the Garden of Gethsemane, Jesus angrily commanded his disciple Peter to put down his sword, and healed the Roman Centurion, whose ear Peter had cut off. He told his disciples, “He who lives by the sword, dies by the sword.” If we re-write those words for the 21st century, we'd get, “He who lives by the AK-47, dies by the AK-47.” Let's also remember that AK-47's have no place in the Kin-dom of Heaven.

Lest we forget, Jesus was also a refugee. An angel appeard to his earthly father Joseph in a dream and commanded him to flee to Egypt to escape the murderous wrath of King Herod. Fortunately , Egypt did not fortify their border with shipping containers, like the out-going RepubliKKKlan governor of Arizona. Let's also remember Jesus’ famous words, "Whatsoever you do unto the least of these my brethren, you do also unto me.” Jesus’ depiction of the Final Judgment should make it clear that we will be judged by the way we treat the vulnerable and mariginalized — not by the walls we build to keep out the people we consider “illegal.” This concern for everyone is certainly an example of Socialism.

Finally, let's consider the real reason Jesus was able to feed the multitudes. When Jesus blessed the modest meal of loaves and fish that a little boy had offered to share with others, that blessing encouraged every one else in the crowd to share what they had with others. That is the real reason behind this miracle. Nevertheless the GOP denounces this concept of sharing a “Socialism.”

While we are examining Jesus' record of Socialism in the Gospels, let's also look at the GOP's record. Ever since 1964, the GOP has constantly denounced all efforts to provide “justice for all” as “socialism.” Fair housing laws? “Socialism.” The Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Voting Rights Law of 1965? "Socialism.” Medicare? "Socialism.” The ACA and Medicaid? “Socialism.” Food stamps? "Socialism.” Labor unions? "Socialism.” Social Security. "Socialism.” The list is endless.

All of these programs and proposals actually fulfill the words of the Lord's Prayer: "Thy will be done, on earth as it is in Heaven.” So even the Lord's Prayer is Socialist propaganda.

And Jesus, who taught us the Lord's Prayer, was the World's First Socialist.
