The dogs know! Decorations should be blue and not red!
Welcome 🌻 to Friday’s Roundup of Good News!
After so many years of pulling up the couch cushions looking for lost nuggets of good news, turning clouds inside out in search of silver linings, and donning rose-colored glasses to see if they somehow make anything look better, it’s disconcerting to have good news delivered, wrapped prettily, with bows on top. 🎁 I guess Biden really did fix the supply chains.
There’s lots of good news these days. President Biden and his team are making such a difference. Louis DeJoy, who still deserves to be fired and probably investigated, has OK’d electric vehicles for the USPS fleet! after he was forced to, of course . The House Ways and Means Committee is releasing the iDJiT’s tax returns! Special Counsel Jack Smith is on the job! The Jan 6 committee also has a dedicated partner! Zelenskyy has come to the House! (And the Rs are a complete mess.) The J6 committee has released its report!
Still, I think there's tremendous value in these GNRs. The fact that there is good news these days is because of groups of people like us. If we don’t make it happen, it doesn’t happen.
Besides, I feel as if so many of you are part of my extended family. You’re my peeps!
Happy holidays, dear friends! Welcome to the Gnuville buffet of good news, and feel free to put more on the table.

No one here is naïve; we are aware of the many who are fighting to destroy our country. Some of us expected it: the cheating, the lying, the chaos, and yes, even the attempts to cling to power despite the clear will of the people. But we are here to read the efforts and the positive results of those (including us and our fellow gnus) who are working so hard to save our country from those very bad people. We are furious with them for what they are doing and we are letting them know. Remember:
💙 There are more of us than there are of them.
💛 They are terrified when we organize. THERE IS LOTS OF EVIDENCE THAT THEY ARE TERRIFIED!
💔 They want us to be demoralized. The best way to keep up your spirits is to fight. So, take the time to recharge your batteries, but find ways to contribute to the well-being of our country and our world.

⚡️ Final report out from J6 committee! Brandi Buchman, Daily Kos
Special Counsel Jack Smith is experienced in prosecuting presidents Jose Pagliery,The Daily Beast. Sorry, it’s behind a paywall, but you can rest assured that Smith is probably the guy for the job.
Witnesses had lost hope and disappeared. Criminal suspect No. 1 had become president. And the long-awaited indictment now seemed unreachable. Then, American prosecutor Jack Smith came along and took charge, sending his investigators on an aggressive mission to win back reluctant witnesses—by targeting the tight-lipped politicians and militant nationalists who had kept them silent. The story may sound familiar, if not a bit like resistance fan-fiction. But this story is actually about Smith’s efforts in Kosovo, a small country in southeastern Europe that was historically an Albanian enclave in Serbia. It was difficult every step of the way. Smith had to defend his work from widespread accusations that he was conducting an unfair political prosecution to remove the nation’s favorite leader. And the narrative was that cooperators are traitors—and that these lawyers like Smith were trying to destroy the country. ✂️ Since the U.S. Department of Justice appointed Smith as the trusted special counsel investigating former President Donald Trump last month, there have been dozens of news profiles focusing on his time as a domestic prosecutor investigating public corruption. Several have even incorrectly identified the international court he served on. But this is the first sweeping look at what exactly he accomplished while on a special assignment abroad in Europe, where he took down Kosovo’s sitting president—and gained the credentials to target an American one.
USDA helping rural America transition to renewable energy Olivia Rosane EcoWatch
The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) announced Thursday it would channel nearly $600 million into helping the rural and agricultural U.S. transition to renewable energy and respond to the climate crisis. That breaks down into $285 million that has already been promised to 844 projects in 46 states and $300 million in additional loans and grants, $250 million of which was made possible by the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA). “People in rural America are on the front lines of climate change, and our communities deserve investments that will strengthen our Country’s resilience,” USDA Secretary Tom Vilsack said in the press release announcing the funds.

💣 Republicans: Party of Crimes and Chaos 💣
National GOP was deep in the fake electors scheme Josh Kavensky, Talking Points Memo
The report shows just how far the national Republican Party was in the fake electors scheme. In one sense, this was obvious from the start: proposed electors tend to be composed of state party officials, lobbyists, and influential committee members. The elector slates are literally made of top state party officials. But the report provides new details which tie it to the national party. Republican National Committee Chairwoman Ronna McDaniel, for example, personally gave Trump an update on the fake elector effort on the evening of Dec. 14, the day that the slates all voted.

Voters’ remorse for George Santos Caitlin Huey-Burns, Erica Brown, Sheena Samu, CBS News
Voters elected Republican George Santos in November to represent parts of Long Island and Queens in Congress but did not know the candidate was running on a resume filled with apparently fabricated claims about his schooling and work — leaving more questions than answers about how he will now navigate a planned move to Washington. And now even some Santos allies are calling on the politician to step forward and either verify or explain the misleading aspects of the biography he ran on. "We have reached out to his office directly to ascertain whether they are true. These allegations, if true, are deeply troubling," said Matt Brooks, CEO of the Republican Jewish Coalition, which has featured Santos at events and in videos alongside the party's top leaders, including former President Donald Trump and Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis.
If you’ve missed it, basically everything this guy has claimed is a lie: education, work history, and heritage. I don’t know, seems like what the Rs are offering these days, so why is anyone surprised?
There’s more! He claims to be gay, but he was previously married to a woman, and so far, no one can find his marriage certificate to the guy who is supposed to be husband:

Greene and Boebert not getting along Zeeshan Aleem MSNBC
Boebert took a surprising swipe at Greene during an interview on Monday when asked whether she would support House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy’s bid to become House speaker in the next Congress, as her longtime ally Greene does. Boebert balked at the question: “Well, you know, I’ve been aligned with Marjorie and accused of believing a lot of the things that she believes in. I don’t believe in this, just like I don’t believe in Russian space lasers, Jewish space lasers and all of this,” she said to laughter from her audience, before explaining the conditions on which she’d personally back McCarthy. ✂️ Greene was swift to strike back. On Twitter she scoffed at Boebert’s slim margin of victory in her re-election, and lamented that Boebert “childishly threw me under the bus for a cheap sound bite.” Greene also accused Boebert of turning her back on McCarthy, Trump and Greene herself, despite their support for her.
The Greene / Boebert spat is just one snapshot of the problems McCarthy is having. And the Senate Rs don’t have any faith in him, which is why they’ve been working with Ds on the budget. EJ Dionne Jr., Washington Post
The agreement between top Senate Republicans and House and Senate Democrats on a $1.7 trillion deal to fund the federal government through September reflects the politics of fear — fear that the narrow GOP majority in the House might be unfit to govern and is prepared to engage in reckless brinkmanship in future budget battles. said Sen. Kevin Cramer (N.D.). “That concerns me. That could have negative consequences.” Republican senators came close to saying as much. “My concern is that a new House, very small majority, new leadership, is going to have to take over, and to have to start from behind?”“That concerns me. That could have negative consequences.”
And Rs in the House are striking back:

I guess that’s good news for Hunter Biden.
Zelenskyy’s speech showed another crack in the R party Travis Gettys, Raw Story
Some GOP lawmakers, including Sen. Josh Hawley (R-MO) and Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA), did not attend the speech, while Reps. Lauren Boebert (R-CO), Matt Gaetz (R-FL) and others did not stand up to applaud, although many Republicans expressed support for additional aid to Ukraine. "I think behind the scenes there are discussions," McCaskill told "Morning Joe." "I think everyone is very aware that it is very important for the public-facing Ukrainian effort to be without chinks, without any kind of crease that would indicate an unwillingness to prosecute this war to its fullest. There's obviously discussions going on quietly and in private about what is the end game, but I would remind you, America has a history of funding things for a very long time where no end game is part of the equation." "Look at Afghanistan, look at the years we were putting money into Afghanistan and providing them with things they knew were not sustainable long-term," she continued. "Unlike Ukraine where there is a real chance of a flourishing democracy and a leader in Europe post this war if we can get them to the other side without Putin prevailing in any way. I think one of the most interesting things about the politics of this is how the Republican Party has changed. In my time in Congress, there would be no question that the Republican Party would be monolithic in its support for Ukraine, and you see real cracks in the Republican Party right now, more so than in the Democratic Party."
What she did not say, but what I suspect, is that some of them are in thrall to putin. Probably a lot of them. Only 83 House Rs showed up. Which is better than their coming and being rude. It also shows that they’re cowards. Hey, that’s GOOD news for us.
🚚 💙 Democrats Deliver 💙 🚚
Only Dems do real oversight! EJ Dionne, Washington Post
For years, Republicans insisted the Democratic demand for Trump’s returns — which started when he was president and continued after voters sent him back to his Mar-a-Lago estate — was nothing but a fishing expedition. When the Supreme Court ruled that Democrats on the House Ways and Means Committee could access them, GOP outrage grew even louder. But now that the committee has voted to release them, the big news isn’t just what will be found in the full returns when they are released. It’s also that longtime Democratic assertions about the need to access them have been vindicated. Beyond showing that Trump paid no federal income taxes in 2020, the initial report revealed that the IRS violated its own rules, which require auditing of the president and vice president’s returns every year. Trump’s returns were not audited in 2017 or 2018, and the agency moved to begin audits only after Rep. Richard E. Neal (D-Mass.), the committee chair, began requesting them.
Some Rs are mad and are threatening to publish Biden’s returns (they’re already published) or the returns of Supreme Court Justices (a great idea).

Senate passes omnibus spending bill Alayna Treene Axios
The Senate passed the nearly $1.7 trillion long-term, government funding bill 68-29 on Thursday, sending the measure to the House for quick passage before a looming deadline. Why it matters: The legislation will fund the government through next September — preventing the new Congress from being thrust into yet another spending fight when Republicans take control of the House in January. ✂️ The process of getting to final passage was an arduous one, and Congress came close to being forced to kick spending negotiations into the new year — something Democrats and Republicans alike wanted to avoid.
There’s stuff to like and to dislike in the bill.
Mostly unified support in the US for Ukraine. Here are some of President Biden’s remarks Press Release
To Ukrainian people, I say to them all: You have demonstrated — you have shown your strong stand against aggression in the face of the imperial appetites of autocrats who wrongfully believed you might — you might — they might be able to make might right, and they’re not able to do it. Thus far, they have not — they’ve stood alone. You know, and you’ve had — but you haven’t stood alone. You have had significant, significant help. We’ve never stand alone — you will never stand alone. When Ukraine’s freedom was threatened, the American people — like generations of Americans before us — did not hesitate. The support from all across this country, Americans of every walk of life — Democrats and Republicans alike — had the resources and the — to rebound in resounding, united way to do — provide unequivocal and unbending support for Ukraine. Because we understand in our bones that Ukraine’s fight is part of something much bigger. The American people know that if we stand by in the face of such blatant attacks on liberty and democracy and the core principles of sovereignty and territorial integrity, the world would surely face worse consequences. And as I said when Putin rolled his tanks into Ukraine in February: American — American people are prepared to have us stand up to bullies, stand up for freedom. That’s who we are as Americans. And that’s exactly what we’ve done.
Even before the invasion began and Putin threatened Ukraine by building up his forces, we helped make sure Ukraine would be prepared to defend itself — even before they crossed into Ukraine. We provided a steady stream of defensive weapons, including air defense systems and artillery, ammunition, and so much more. And we’ve not done it alone.
From the very beginning, the United States rallied allies and partners from around the world to stand strong with Ukraine and impose unprecedented — and I emphasize “unprecedented” — sanctions and export controls on Russia, making it harder for the Kremlin to wage its brutal war. More than 50 nations have committed nearly 2,000 tanks and other armored vehicles; more than 800 artillery systems; more 2 million rounds of artillery ammunition; and more than fif- — more than 50 advanced multiple rocket launching systems; anti-ship and anti- — and air defense systems all to strengthen Ukraine. x When these two laugh someone in Kremlin is crying :) pic.twitter.com/GbDXVfHCRq — Iuliia Mendel (@IuliiaMendel) December 21, 2022

🌱Grass roots. Biden and Harris can do the top-down stuff, but we have to support from the bottom. I don’t know how to deprogram 75 million people, but some things have been written about, such as deep canvassing, and lots of people are talking about this. If you know someone (who did not storm the Capitol), then see if you can be pleasant. Instead of trying to reason with them (logic is obviously not their strong point) distract them with something else. We need to remove the sources of lies and to take down the temperature. If we get more of the Rs to wear masks and to get vaccinated and to vote for Ds, the country will be a better place. We need to coax some of them out of the rabbit holes and diffuse the anger and the crazy.

tRump lawyer takes leave of absence after telling witness to lie to J6 committee Justin Wise, Bloomberg News
Stefan Passantino has taken a leave of absence from law firm Michael Best & Friedrich following an allegation that he advised a Trump White House staffer to mislead the House committee investigating the Jan. 6 attack at the US Capitol. Passantino, who was once the top ethics lawyer in the Trump White House, later advised White House aide Cassidy Hutchinson as she prepared to go before the committee. CNN reported that committee members believe Passantino urged Hutchinson to mislead the panel. Hutchinson switched lawyers before testifying publicly in a June committee hearing. Passantino’s bio has been scrubbed from Michael Best’s website. He’s on leave “given the distraction of this matter,” he said Wednesday in a email. Passantino said he was not acting on behalf of Michael Best in his work for Hutchinson and pushed back against the allegation that he advised her to mislead lawmakers.

Kari Lake’s lawsuit in AZ is not going well David Edwards, Raw Story
On the first day of Lake's election challenge trial, Judge Peter Thompson said that attorneys for Lake had botched the number system for exhibits. Thompson explained that the court's clerk was forced to work until 11 p.m. to create a new numbering system for the evidence. ✂️ Lake attorney Bryan Blehm was later forced to tell the judge that the plaintiffs had technical problems presenting their evidence. "My specialist did come to this courtroom and test our video equipment on this court's system, your honor," Blehm asserted. "We used a cable that was attached to this desk here that is no longer present. Everything was functioning perfectly at that test, your honor. And so, we came today and that cable is gone. And we're using a different cable, and it's my understanding that the staff is working with the technical side to try and fix what's happening."
This judge had already dismissed 7 of Lake’s 9 claims.

“There is a very tantalizing comment in the executive summary," said Weissmann, a former assistant U.S. attorney who worked on Mueller's team. "It's hard to call it that because it's 160 pages, but in that executive summary there's a reference to why the Department of Justice may not have sought to charge Mark Meadows and Dan Scavino with contempt." "If you recall, they were both referred by the committee to the Department of Justice for contempt failing to comply with a subpoena, and one of the things the report says, is it sort of speculates, but odd that it says it may be that they're already cooperating," Weissmann added, "and with Mark Meadows, that would be huge. I mean, he is in the place to know everything so, obviously, if not cooperating already, there is a ton of pressure that is going to be put on him."
Russian economy not doing that well Moscow Times (sorry, no link)
The Russian economy is approaching the end of 2022 in a far better state than many had anticipated in the spring following the invasion of Ukraine and ensuing Western sanctions. The fall in GDP has only amounted to about 3% or even less, and the U.S. dollar is still trading at less than 65 rubles. Even the Western ban on high-tech imports, although challenging, has proved manageable. But none of this means that Russia’s economy is out of the woods: many risks still remain. We asked economists from Russia’s leading investment banks to highlight the new warning signs that have emerged in recent months. Oil and gas revenues started to fall sharply. In November, oil and gas revenues contributed 866 billion rubles ($13 billion) to the state budget — down 2.1% year-on-year. This is not a critical fall in revenues. However, in reality, almost half of that sum ($6.4 billion) came from a one-off payment of Gazprom’s mineral extraction taxes. Without that money, oil and gas income was down 48.9% compared with 2021.
There are two possible reasons for this. First is the near-total cessation of pipeline gas exports to Gazprom’s lucrative European market following the closure and subsequent explosions on the Nord Stream gas pipeline. Second is the fall in prices for Russian oil, which led to November’s oil revenues being down 25.4% year-on-year.

📣 Let’s Honor Truth ☀️️
This week I want to honor the Democrats on the House Ways and Means Committee, who voted to release the iDJiT’s tax returns. I really did not think they would do it.
Why is this so important? I don’t think it will answer many questions about tRump and his finances. We suspected he was lying about the audits. We were sure he was lying about the numbers. We know he’s not as rich as he pretends to be. The returns are mostly full of lies.
But the important thing it does is to expose how the IRS has failed to do its duty — at least under tRump.
From the Washington Post article Michael Kranish, Jonathan O’Connell, Amy B Wang, Azi Paybarah, Marianna Sotomayor:
The House Ways and Means Committee on Tuesday voted 24 to 16 to release former president Donald Trump’s tax returns, capping a protracted legal and political battle that began when Trump was in the Oval Office. ✂️ After the vote, the committee revealed that the Internal Revenue Service did not audit Trump’s returns during his first two years in office, despite a rule mandating such reviews, and never completed any audits while he served. The IRS began its first audit of Trump’s returns on the same day that Ways and Means Committee Chairman Richard E. Neal (D-Mass.) sent a written request in April 2019 for the information and then assigned the bulk of the work to just one agent, the panel said.
However, I’m aware of several audits the tRump IRS did of his “enemies”. Andrew McCabe and James Comey were subjected to thorough and unnecessary audits.
Well done, Ds on the House Ways and Means Committee!

🐝 New California project to use solar panels to help restore pollinators and diversity Olivia Rosane, EcoWatch
An innovative solar project at a decommissioned nuclear power plant in California has found a way to tackle both the climate and biodiversity crises. Non-profit the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) and the Sacramento Municipal Utility District (SMUD) announced Thursday that they would restore native prairie and habitat for pollinators beneath and around 160 megawatts (MW) of solar panels. “The Rancho Seco project is a unique collaboration at the intersection of communities, biodiversity, and climate-friendly energy,” EPRI senior technical executive and conservation biologist Jessica Fox said in a press release. “Successful demonstration could provide the blueprint for future renewable energy projects throughout the country that are restorative not just in their kilowatts, but also for local people and biodiversity.”
🐳 To stop whale strikes, cargo ships were asked to slow down. It worked. Michelle Laxton, KCLU via Science Friday. It has to do with the Santa Barbara channel.
So they had a challenge on their hands. The whales are coming to the channel to feed or migrate through. And it’s not like you can get rid of the ships. There’s the large naval presence in the region and where the whales are congregating happens to be right next to three very important ports—Long Beach, Los Angeles and Hueneme. “These ports account for over 40% of all imports to the United States. So a really high volume of commerce. And while we’re trying to protect these natural resources, we also want to maintain vibrant maritime commerce, because it really is the lifeblood of not only the U.S. economy, but the global economy,” said Hastings. So for years NOAA and their partners tried to come up with solutions for these whale strikes and after not really having much success, about a decade ago, they had an idea—they called it the Protecting Blue Whales and Blue Skies incentive program. A voluntary program that asks shipping companies to slow down to 10 knots in the channel, that’s about 12 miles an hour, between the months of May and November—when the whales are most present in the channel. Essentially making the channel like a school zone.
