Thermal Thursday: Progressive Christians and Happy Holidays! [1]

Today’s Topic: Lately I’ve been hearing more “War on Christmas” nonsense, with complaints about the friendly wish for “Happy Holidays” “erasing Christmas,” so decided to weigh in. “Happy Holidays” is the generic term and I’ve been using it since I was a kitten. I say it before Thanksgiving to include the whole holiday season for people I won’t see often, right after Christmas to include New Year’s, and so on. I say it to people of whose religion I am not sure. And yes, it includes Christmas!! It’s the same as saying “Merry Christmas” to other Christians if they are not insular jerks, IMO. If you want me to wish you a Happy Hanukkah, a Wonderful Winter Solstice, a Joyous Kwanzaa, or any other religion-specific wish, or Season’s Greetings or some such if you prefer no religion, then I am happy to say so and appreciate being clued in to the proper address. However, “Happy Holidays” is meant to be inclusive, excluding no one.

ProgressiveChristianity.org agrees with me — and points out that no non-Christian Americans have ever tried to ban Christmas, although it was once banned in America — by the Puritans.

That’s a short topic for this week, as I have to run to the store! I was hoping to buy fresh fruit tomorrow for guests on Saturday, but they’re predicting snow and sleet moving in tonight, making travel dangerous later. So I will be taking off shortly, but see y’all when I get back!
