Standing Ovations Are Good but Temper With Restraint To Avoid MAD [1]

The reaction of the joint Senate and House Wednesday was eerily similar to the vote to attack Iraq. Of course,this actual war is deeply morally justified where it is now well accepted the Iraq War was not. I too was as moved as anyone by the words of Volodymyr Zelenskyy. But wait. Take a breath. Iraq did not have Weapons of Mass Destruction. Russia does.
It is of special interest in Florida that atmospheric modeling has vastly improved. We can now get a good handle on the direction and intensity of hurricanes. Similarly models have done better regarding global warming. They did a pretty decent job way back when on predictions of Nuclear War effects. They even called it MAD Mutually Assured Destruction.
Those cutting their teeth on post apocalyptic fiction from the Mad Max to the Walking Dead might be forgiven for hiding behind an assurance that Nuclear Armageddon is a fiction. It is not.
Those in Congress are mostly old enough to recall what it was like and now know we've been back in a Cold War or worse for many years now. Should Putin or his generals commit the mass suicide a nuclear war causes it will destroy human life.
The Southern Hemisphere has some chance. Those who survive would need at least a decade maybe two of food stored. The military needed to keep coming back for money and conventional is costly. They modeled a limited nuclear war not an all out one. I mean a Russian American conflict is way too real. It was left to others to show just like with conventional sources you have the soot blocking the sun preventing the growing of food and causing intense cooling dropping temperatures as much as sixty degrees Fahrenheit then the carbon dioxide prevails increasing warming.
Food does not grow under these conditions.
Maybe it's good our media doesn't pick up on this: Russia recently released that Putin has an out by leaving for South America. Oligarchs could have already set him up for twenty years of food in a bunker. Kennedy barely held off his generals in the early sixties. And he hadn't culled them so that only warmongers remained.
Dictators tend to do that. As bad as Putin is, don't think his generals aren't horrible.
What to do? I get it. Not much that you can. Might I suggest that you stop treating this like a silly football game and see it through a more mature lens. We lucked out that we have a president who has been doing that. Maybe you can try a prayer or a mantra.
Temper the cheering. Reality is dark and dangerous. Walk that line while we support and certainly must stand for freedom but we will not warmonger. Americans aren't currently at risk in Ukraine and only a bit of coin is being spent which is a small price to pay. Instead of intensity let's pray for a future.
Most people deep down get this and don't complain it's not patriotic. We all know Russia versus the United States is a war where no one wins. And in this case humanity itself loses.
