Near Indiana’s Kinsey Institute, several jolly-looking young women recently gave away condoms. Though they had to go off-campus to do so, they proceeded unhindered.
Such freedom may not last long. Since Dobbs v Jackson nixed Roe v Wade, at least two “Justices” have effectively launched a (further) crusade against (of all things) contraception.
The backstory speaks volumes. Shelves. Libraries. In 1965, just eight years before Roe, Griswold v Connecticut blocked strictures on birth control- on behalf of married couples only.
A year or so later, I’d learned “the facts of life.” I lived in a suburban enclave where just about every house sheltered a married couple, plus two, three, or four late boomer offspring.
One medium sized SFH boasted eight. One day, while driving by their abode, my mom candidly addressed their abundance. "Well, they're Catholic. So, they don't believe in birth control."
"Uh, why did they stop at eight?"
“What do you mean?”
“Well, J.S. Bach [not to mention his wife!] had what, 20? And they weren’t even Catholic, right?”
“Well, perhaps [our neighbors] couldn’t have any more. More likely, they chose not to.”
“So, at some point their principles went out the window?”
“You could put it that way. Or you might say they did their level best.”
I suspect that, even after Dobbs, today’s young adults may take contraception for granted. Aside to them (above all): don’t. The poohbahs who foist the long arm of theocracy into our beleaguered bedrooms aren’t just medieval; they’re just plain evil. Early and often, loudly and clearly, let’s stop mincing words, and sound the alarm.
