SocialSecurity,Medicare, Hostage to Debt Ceiling Fight? Not if Democrats Turn this Around! [1]

Democrats, could turn it around! Everyone in Congress seems to understand that raising the debt ceiling needs to be done. And the next deadline to do that is sometime in 2023. The GOP threatened, as they usually do, to not lift the debt limit unless the Democrats agree to cut spending on Social Security, Medicare, and a variety of our safety net programs. Clearly, they expect our Democrats to get busy seeing how much they can salvage, how little cuts the GOPers will settle for.

But it doesn’t have to be this way! What if our Democratic politicians say to the GOP, we will only lift the debt ceiling, and save our standing in the world, if you Republicans agree that the budget stands as is, without the cuts to our safety net programs?

Remember these necessary programs are widely popular with voters of all persuasions. Biden and well known Democrats could make it a HUGE deal, calling daily news conferences at the White House, and in every state capital where there’s an elected Democrat anywhere in the state! And getting Democrats and/or their staff speakers on all news programs, hammering the Republicans as the ones standing in the way of doing what must be done. If Democrats made a big enough show of solidarity and were on all the main stream media, constantly, maybe even Fox couldn’t ignore them. Can you imagine Democrats, going toe to toe with GOP news commentators?

Our Democratic leaders must get proactive to turn this around. It isn’t clear exactly when the debt ceiling will be reached, and when the vote will come to extend it. The sooner they get strong, and into the debt ceiling fight, laying out their demands, instead of reacting to GOP threats, the better. Are they listening?
