Hi!

It’s Tampa City Councilwoman Lynn Hurtak again! We were blown away by the amount of support from our last post. It’s incredibly encouraging to see such a community of progressive thinkers online who are working to make our country better- and I got to meet some constituents here too!

We had a ton of events last week–including a 12+ hour city council meeting on Thursday. Highlights for me included meeting with the Hillsborough LGBTQ caucus, Tampa Tiger Bay Club, and the Bay Area Sierra Club for their monthly meetings/holiday parties. We also got to attend the opening of the brand new dog park in Ybor! I’m a huge dog person, and we are actively searching for our next pup–probably a beagle like our last two. So, of course, meeting lots of local furry friends was the highlight of my week!

The biggest news from council this week was a unanimous vote on language for the March ballot that would allow the Citizens Review Board to appoint their own attorney. This decision comes in the wake of the national spotlight on abuses of power in our police department leadership. It’s clear that the people of Tampa need the ability to communicate with and ensure a strong standard of justice in law enforcement in our city. To be candid, I’m not sure if my opponent in this upcoming race would have made the same decision.

The other biggest new thing for me this week? The calls. It’s part of every campaign, but since I was appointed, not elected, I haven't experienced it before. Spending hours on the phone calling both everyone you know, and many people you don’t, to ask them for money and support can be intimidating and overwhelming. I’m lucky to have so many in my camp, but there’s still a ton of calling ahead of me.

I hope I can continue to be a window into what it’s like to run for local office so more folks can be empowered to do it. This week I’m taking a bit of a breather to celebrate my 10-year anniversary with my ever-supportive husband Tim Burke. I’m so grateful for him–and that we’re getting to take adventures on our bikes and enjoy time with friends. I still have to step away to make calls, but that’s life as a candidate.
