Dr. Bob Henson at Yale Climate Connections “Eye on the Storm” blog describes it as “The Weather Nightmare Before Christmas.” Today’s weather models are growing in consensus that a very strong winter storm will affect much of the Midwest and Great Lakes states by Thursday, with a strong cold blast reaching into the Eastern States and Deep South by Friday.

Travelers take early warning! The huge difference in barometric pressures between the big storm in the Great Lakes (980mb) and the very cold airmass centered in the High Plains states (1050+mb) will likely lead to extremely strong winds and dangerous wind chills. Although low temperature records may not be broken, the expected winds will make this a particularly hazardous storm system for a large part of the country, during a particularly busy travel period.

Please keep an eye on www.weather.gov or your favorite weather app this week as you plan your travel. Check your generator if you have one, or your firewood supply! Have a safe holiday week!

First, here’s the predicted surface winds in knots on Friday midday from the U.S. GFS model — notice the tropical storm force winds (red) on the lakes and off the east coast! Even those green and yellow near-gale force winds will be sufficient to pile up huge snowdrifts in the midwest and could bring down trees from the South to New England.

Here’s the European model’s predicted low temperatures for Saturday morning. Watch out for a hard freeze in parts of the South!

Disclaimers, I’m no meteorologist, your mileage may vary etc. The various weather model predictions for this cold airmass and storm seem quite consistent, but models aren’t perfect and it’s too early to predict exact timing, snow amounts etc. Please pay attention to the NWS for best results!
