Snow goose juveniles (blue morph) on the left and a (white morph) on the right.

In the poor light, during a misting rain, I noticed the odd couple above moving among a small flock of Canadian geese. The group was foraging on the damp grass. I wasn’t sure what I was seeing but that didn’t stop me from getting shots (even poor quality ones).

Once home, I found the answer on Cornell’s site. Here is a photo from their files.

Here is the first video I took when I saw the geese. I forgot to turn off the truck so my first video has the audio turned off. No one (especially the animals) wants to hear a motor running while watching animals feeding.

You can see that the Snow geese are smaller that the Canadian. That is not the case with their appetites. Upon closer inspection, you may notice that the blue morph in my video is beginning to change color on it’s head to white. I would guess that this is a second year juvenile and should be breeding next year.

In the next video, I caught the only adult Snow goose (white morph) in the group. I did remember to turn the truck off so there is sound. Sadly, not a peep out of the Snow goose.

I found this tidbit of information from the Audubon site.

map from Hinterland Who’s Who / Greater Snow Goose

So with the information provided, I have a final video of a Lesser Snow goose adult, two juvenile white morphs and a juvenile blue morph among Canadians (while wintering and dining in Mississippi). That means the Snow geese I saw while I lived on the outer banks of NC (during the 1980’s) were Greater Snow geese. OMG ! that makes my Blue goose a lifer for me.

While on my search through the internet, I came across this final bit of fun. I hope you enjoy the music.

I hope a simple surprise happens and thrills you while your out and about.

How have your Dawn chorus moments been lately?
