So Much Talent!

The Summary

Between the two diaries, you get to enjoy over 120 editorial cartoons and relevant Tweets from the past week.

Last night on NBC, “Saturday Night Live” had a field day mocking Trump and his latest scam. His flagging 2024 Campaign (yes, we are already at that point) isn’t impressing anyone except the MAGA crowd. Other challengers are expected to join him in seeking the Republican nomination.

Even if his legal troubles allow him to continue his candidacy — and it remains a possibility that Trump wins the nomination in a somewhat crowded field just like he did in 2016 — the odds of him becoming president again are increasingly slim. Simply stated, there aren’t enough voters in the country who would still support this scam artist, huckster, and carnival barker.

In Part 1 of this diary, the editorial cartoonists piled on. They portrayed Trump as a clueless joker, a grifter taking advantage of gullible MAGA followers, desperate to stay politically relevant, and while trying to deflect attention from his growing legal problems, shooting himself in the foot.

“Miss Crazy” aka Marjorie Taylor Greene is seen by cartoonists as a far-Right, wacky, gun-loving, conspiracy-theorist Christian nationalist. Some of her GOP pals aren’t much better.

The discovery of carbon-free clean fusion energy is seen by the editorial cartoonists as a major scientific breakthrough. Who’s not too happy with it? The fossil fuel industry. While this promising alternative may be a few decades away from commercial implementation, that span of time gives its opponents plenty of opportunities to mislabel it and demonize this inevitable transformation. When huge corporate profits are at stake for the fossil fuel bosses, expect the worst.

Finally, towards the end of this diary is a maddening video about those so-called “polite” Canadians. It’s sure to enrage you. And remember to take the diary poll about your favorite Alfred Hitchcock movie.

This diary has over 70 editorial cartoons and other graphics. Part 2 will have close to 40 cartoons, mostly about two self-centered individuals in the news: Elon Musk and Kirsten Sinema. I’ll post additional cartoons in both diaries in the comments section about Iran, Russia, the just-concluded World Cup, marriage equality, Brittney Griner, and other assorted issues.

When I post Part 2 later on Monday, December 19th probably between 6:00-8:00 pm ET, I’ll also post a link here. Thanks for reading.

P.T. Barnum Was Correct

The Incredible Sulk

The Republican Party faces a choice in 2024: either it fully embraces Trump and goes down to defeat, or, it seeks an alternative leader who might have a chance of winning. Even if Trump is taken down by another candidate, it won’t be without a politically-damaging, bruising fight. That choice will define the party for a generation to come.

So far, the GOP is doomed to choose the former.

GOPocalypse Now? “The defeat of the Republican senatorial candidate Herschel Walker in a December runoff election in Georgia closes the circle on the most decisive rejection of the influence of any individual politician in our lifetimes. That politician is not Herschel Walker but Donald Trump. The question that now faces the Republican Party is whether its toxic romance with Trump will poison the well for the GOP for a generation or whether it can, as they say in the literature of addiction and recovery, break the cycle of abuse and begin to heal.” “What happened in Georgia from Election Night in November 2020 until the runoff Walker lost in December 2022 was the perfect distillation of what happened across the country during the same period inside the party Trump has commandeered for his own personal use.” “You May Have Won a Dinner With Me”… Wait, There’s More… x How low will the grift go? https://t.co/76rXuvfHHp — Matt Wuerker (@wuerker) December 15, 2022
