According to one of the signs:
“Sphagnum moss, the main plant in our wetland’s peat, grows above the water’s surface and decays just below it.
As successive layers of moss continually grow, die, and become preserved under the fen’s surface by lack of oxygen and nutrients, they keep building upwards. The weight of the upper layers compresses the layers beneath, creating a dense mat.”
According to one of the signs:
“Below a complex, tangled surface lies a 25-foog-thick, 14,000-year-old accumulation of sphagnum peat. It forms the foundation of a rare natural wetland found in only a few places on the Oregon coast.
An ordinary path through the wetland ecosystem would soon destroy it. The boardwalk, which was built using a system of inert bracing and sustainable materials, gives you safe but close-up access to this fascinating habitat.”
