Once upon a grammartime someone added an apostrophe to hers and made it her’s. His eventually (apparently it took six weeks) registered that change and wanted an apostrophe, too. But when his became hi’s, folks didn’t know what hi’s meant and shook their heads. The writer who had added the apostrophe to hers decided the logic, though well-thought-out, wasn’t worth the confusion when applied to his and its (which everyone understood to be a contraction for it is) and decided that from that moment on no possessive pronouns would ever use an apostrophe. Thereafter, his, hers, yours, ours, mine, theirs, its all possessed, apostrophe-freely. So of course everyone’s respect for the rules lived happily in everyone’s after.
