Midterms didn't prove anything about majoritarianism [1]

Recently, I read this article by Matt Yglesias where he argued that the midterms shows Dems can’t win by energizing the base, they have to appeal to Republicans as well.

The main logic for this is that the Republicans had greater turnout during midterms than Dems but still lost a seat in the Senate and received about 9 seats when the most conservative gains predicted for them was about 12.

So basically, the GOP shot too far to their right while the Dems kept near the center and were rewarded for it but if we go too far left to win more votes we’ll see the same thing happen to us?

I don’t buy that.

And I don’t agree with his definition of leftist policy. Passing CTC extension, free childcare and free community college aren’t solely leftist issues, but they’re the main issues the progressive caucus fought for. One or two may have picked fringe issues but that’s a pointless argument.

They did not foment an insurrection, plan a coup with multiple politicians at multiple levels, lead a multi-media campaign against minorities or blame immigrants for some perceived crime wave and their VOTERS never asked them to.

MAYBE THOSE ACTIONS are what stopped the Republicans winning more seats and our lesson is just not to do that rather than play to Republican crossover voters.

But hey, what do I know?
