Are we Western or California or ? Flock of gulls relaxing at Bolsa Chica Reserve

Saw no bucket this morning. So here is a challenge. We have folks talk about the difficulty identifying the gulls.

Post a photo of a gull you definitely ID and describe the field marks for the rest of us.

Also if the Bucketeer who posted that cool gull chart could repost that would be great.

The Daily Bucket is a nature refuge. We amicably discuss animals, weather, climate, soil, plants, waters and note life’s patterns.

We invite you to note what you are seeing around you in your own part of the world, and to share your observations in the comments below.

Each note is a record that we can refer to in the future as we try to understand the phenological patterns that are quietly unwinding around us. To have the Daily Bucket in your Activity Stream, visit Backyard Science’s profile page and click on Follow.

I have 3 gulls that I positively ID.

Ringbilled gull — distinct black ring on the beak — Point Reyes National Seashore

Besides the classic ring, adult Ringbilled gulls have yellow legs, black wing tips and grey feathering on their head.

Heerman’s Gull — juvenile

Small dark gull — almost all dark grey/black in non breeding color with white wing and tail tips and black legs.

Western Gull

Red spot on bill, pink legs, droopy tail, dark grey mantle edged in white, black wing tips with white spots.

Which gulls can you ID? Please post.

Finally negative, I am off to a holiday luncheon with mask and firm no touching stay away vibes.

High pressure is back sending very needed rain north to Washington. Clear, dry and cool with high temps in the 50s for the next week. Only good thing is that it will make travel easy for the Christmas holiday.

What’s up in your neck of the woods?
