Triumph of Madness: Congress passes bill removing military vaccine requirement [1]

Yesterday, Congress Cleared a Military Bill Repealing the Vaccine Mandate for Troops, with a veto-proof 83-11 vote, despite objections from President Biden.

I recognize the need for compromise and that the bill contains important measures like $800 million in new security aid to Ukraine and long overdue changes in the military’s policy for handling sexual assault cases.

But it’s hard for me to believe there wasn’t a way to push through a bill without the mandate repeal in our last chance to pass something before the cro-magnon science deniers take charge in the House.

Former Congressman Max Rose writes in the Times: An Unvaccinated Military Puts Our National Security at Risk:

Our elected officials shouldn’t turn our military into pawns in the Covid culture war, complicating the decisions of combat commanders and damaging American national security. . . . If unvaccinated civilians fall ill and lack private health insurance, taxpayers may wind up paying the cost of their treatment; if service members fall ill while deployed, the price could be paid in the blood of their fellow troops. The civilian problem is a frustration; as a veteran, I find the military issue intolerable.

There is no good faith argument against vaccine requirements — whether in the military or for other settings where public health is in danger. It’s not just this specific bill, it’s part of surrendering to anti-science and anti-health forces in every part of society.

We have the narcissist who bought Twitter tweeting “Prosecute/Fauci,” as I wrote earlier this week — an act of terror incitement putting him in the same class as other American Ayatollahs issuing Fatwahs against people doing their job and protecting our health and our country. Deviancy is being defined down every day and I’m just sick of it.

I’m a realist who believes in compromise if necessary, but lines have to be drawn, if not in the legislation, in the media. Hundreds of thousands of people in this country have been slaughtered by COVID and those responsible are still not being held to account, as Thom Hartmann wrote earlier this week. Instead they are two frontrunners for the Republican nomination for President in 2024.

Madness is now the norm in national discourse on this and so many other issues. It’s time to take a stand for truth, science, reason and survival.
