We’ve all known that since his acquisition of Twitter back towards the end of October this year, Elon Musk has been slowly but steadily destroying what had been one of the better social media sites but now things seem to have taken a darker turn. Apparently, the “free speech absolutist” has, if reports are to be believed, suspended the accounts of several journalists (per Ben Collins over at NBC). Quoting the Verge….
Twitter has suspended the accounts of several prominent reporters on Twitter, such as The New York Times’ Ryan Mac, CNN’s Donie O’Sullivan, The Washington Post’s Drew Harwell, The Intercept’s Micha Lee, Mashable’s Matt Binder, Aaron Rupar, Tony Webster, and potentially more. A list of the suspensions is being compiled by NBC’s Ben Collins. Currently, it’s unclear why the bans are taking place. The reporters being banned largely cover technology, and most appear to have recently written stories on Elon Musk.
Now, I know I’m not the sharpest tool of note in the American toolshed but if this doesn’t confirm Elon Musk as one of the biggest self-serving narcissists in recent memory then we may have to redefine the definition of narcissist.
At present, going off of Collins’ reporting (from the linked tweet above), here’s a list of journalists that had their accounts suspended just now: CNN’s Donie O’Sullivan, WaPo’s Drew Harwell, the NYT’s Ryan Mac, Mashable’s Matt Binder, the Intercept’s Micah Lee, along w/journalist Aaron Rupar and Tony Webster and political commentator Keith Olbermann.
If this wasn’t another in a long line of reasons to leave that toxic bird site, I don’t know what would convince one to leave there….
.and as I’m writing this up, there’s also reporting from the Guardian on this as well. Not a good night for free speech on the bird site but what’d anyone expect since Musk’s purchase of the place.
