The Road Ahead?

Definitely not a good week in the still ongoing Covid-19 pandemic. The weekly global death toll is back above 12,000 to its highest level in more than 3 months, and the weekly caseload of new infections is likewise approaching 4 million for the first time since early September — though compared to where we were last year at this time with the start of the Omicron tsunami, things aren’t looking nearly that bad yet.

Perhaps the most portentous development last week was China’s belated abandonment of much of its Zero-Covid policy in the wake of nation-wide protests. In the absence of mandatory mass testing, new symptomatic cases in China declined substantially this week (the ones recorded here), and asymptomatic cases fell even more precipitously, but this is almost certainly just a false calm before the coming storm.
