Elon Musk has banned Mastodon from Twitter, on the grounds that a Mastodon tweet mentioned that a major Twitter user had moved to Mastodon. See Taylor Hatmaker’s “Twitter suspends Mastodon’s account, making a good case for Mastodon” in TechCrunch. The Twitter user regularly posts the location of Musk’s jet; although this is public information Musk doesn’t want it publicized on Twitter, so much that now even if you talk about this info being public elsewhere you’ll be banned from Twitter.

So much for Elon’s commitment to free speech, huh?

Now that Musk has made it clear that he’s OK with racists and Nazis spreading hate on Twitter, but will ban someone merely publicizing open-source data that Musk doesn’t like, isn’t it high time that DailyKos makes it easier to refer to Mastodon posts? I’ve been seeing a lot of Daily Kos articles lately containing a lot of pointers to Twitter, even when equivalent material is available on Mastodon (because some users are cross-posting). If material is available elsewhere, why not make it easy for DKos stories to cite it elsewhere? Pointing to Twitter gives Musk more advertiser money and that’s not a good thing at this point.

Is there some fear that if DKos encourages stories to point to Mastodon, then Musk will start censoring Twitter tweets that point to DKos? Because if that’s the fear, DKos should ignore it. We can’t let Musk tell us what to say or how to say it.
