Of Smashed Plates and Templates: Adieu to the Select Committee [1]

In a nutshell, let’s take stock. With (it was widely noted) “democracy on the ballot,” newsies bent over backwards to implicitly blame Dems for inflation- while failing to credit them with having saved the nation by defeating, two years prior, the cult of win-or-coup.
Even so, by the Dems’ diehard, roundly disproven “rational man” model of voting behavior, things should have gone splendidly at the polls in ‘22. Exhibit A: the House select committee’s slow, deliberate, “get to the bottom” delve into 1/6/21 roused every cerebral atom of my being. It floated my boat from here to Aruba.
Trouble was, I only got one vote.
Let’s face it. The hearings were drawn out. They became (for many) a yawner. Not to suggest it was the committee’s fault that getting to (or at) the top guy looked to be off the table. But here’s the bottom line. A lame duck loser who claimed he’d re-upped “by landslide” directed a mob (rife with militias with whom he’d openly aligned himself) to “fight like hell” to redress his bogus grievance. Like it or not, report it or not, his lack of accountability cannot speak well of our claim to possess an advanced, thriving democracy.
Unchecked and unbalanced, Donald Trump has gone his merry way. At a March 2022 rally, he told his troop to prepare to “lay down their very lives” for his cause. At Mar-a-Lago, he supped with Nick “It’s Not Anti-Semitic to Hate Jews” Fuentes (who seems to support Trump pal Vladimir Putin’s blitz in Ukraine). Days before this writing, Trump inveighed against some Constitutional “rules”- including the right of an electoral victor to hold office.
Credit where due. The committee has revealed a ketchup-spattering, royally pained tantrum. Secret Service skullduggery. And (what a shock) Trump refusing (for hours) to call off the dogs he’d unleashed.
But come on. On Day One, we saw his faithful turn The Hill into Boot Hill (complete with gallows); hearing chants of “HANG MIKE PENCE,” one knew the raiders must also be seeking to slaughter scads of Dems. Promptly released video from The New Yorker’s Luke Mogelson shows palpably Trump-stoked goons in the Senate chamber raving about “set[ting] up a government.”
You might call the early revelations a tough act for probers to follow. And, indeed, a smoking gun. Billowing Howitzer. Or steaming missile tube.
Through time, the committee assiduously proved the case that was self-evident all along. But they failed to win enough hearts-and-minds-and-ballots to keep themselves operative. Two years (almost to the day) after the plunder in the Rotunda, putsch-prone poohbahs will take control of the House. They will close the committee. Visit wrath on those who have besmirched or impeded Trump’s cult. And anoint themselves avatars of God’s Own Party.
Navy combat vet/author/Ukraine legionnaire Malcolm Nance reminds us that the cult of hard-right coup can be counted on to use 1/6 as a “template” for future foul play. With that prospect before us, let’s look forward to (and gird our loins for) a hardscrabble, tyranny-thwarting 2023.
