According to the display:
“Stationed first in North Africa, then southern Italy, and later on Corsica, the 12th Army Air Corps leap-frogged north during 1942-1945, pushing the Axis armies up the Italian boot.”
According to the display:
“For men who signed up with the Army Air Corps, theirs was a game of fate. No one knew what role he’d have, where he’d be sent, or if he’d even survive to talk about his experiences. Boys scrambled out of high school and into Air Corps recruitment centers to beat the odds with a pre-draft test. If they passed, they’d be inducted into the Air Corps. If they failed they could end up anywhere.” \963
This jacket was worn by Keith Lile, a tail gunner, on most of his 59 missions.
Cartoon images of wartime situations were common in the 1940s.
