We have a new project this week, a fairly beefy one for project #1, but there are matching funds available and one never knows how long those will hold out! I’m sure we will have help from other donors, once we call some attention to the project by donating.

Mrs. Cotton teaches middle school in Jackson, Mississippi, and hopes to get her class a microscope and a list of very basic lab supplies. The 2x matching funds are supplied by Jackson Water Crisis Fund: Clean water is a basic human right, and the DonorsChoose Community stands with Jackson teachers in ensuring students can learn and grow safely in the midst of the current water crisis.

PROJECT #1 Project: A Microscopic Experiment Resources: Help me give my students a Science Lab! We need all the basics, beginning with a Microscope and other lab essentials. Economic need: An Equity Focus School; nearly all students from low‑income households. Location: Cardozo Middle School, Jackson, Mississippi Total: $555.11 (2x matching funds from Jackson Water Crisis Fund) Still Needed: $ 555.11 Completed, thank you! Please consider project #2 below. Project description by Mrs. Cotton: What I love about my students is that they’re hungry for more. Because we’re in a low-income area, it’s hard to get the needed materials/items required for doing experiments. These materials will make a difference in their learning by bringing to life what they see on television, YouTube, or wherever else, and placing it directly in front of them. The lessons in which I’ll teach will be “Salt vs. Sugar” where we learn the differences between salt and sugar; “Hair” where fascinating facts are revealed be it cool or gross; “Cheek Swab” where we get to view the cells in our own body, etc. DONATE HERE Donations of ANY size can make a BIG difference! Here are a couple of the things Mrs. Cotton is planning to have her class take a look at. I notice that the microscope requested comes with, among many other things, a phone adapter, so you can look at a phone screen instead of squinting through an eyepiece. This seems to me like a big improvement! x x YouTube Video x x YouTube Video

Last week, we made a good dent in this substantial project for a Georgia high school. It will bring the students some of the most distinguished works of literature in English, several of which have given Nazi bigots considerable distress in many parts of the country. I think we can all agree that we need to get these books to the kids, before their local MAGAs figure out what’s going on.

PROJECT #2 Project: AP Reading Library Resources: Help me give my students a variety of books from diverse authors to help them prepare for the AP Literature test. These are all books that have been utilized on the test multiple times. Please help! Economic need: An Equity Focus School; more than half of students from low‑income households. Location: Hiram High School, Hiram, Georgia Total: $664.93 Still Needed: $ 353.40 $238.40 Project description by Ms. Michelle Roberts: My students are hard-working, enthusiastic learners who are attempting to broaden their horizons by expanding their knowledge of both fiction and nonfiction texts. With budget cuts and the other challenges facing schools over the past few years as well as the current economic hardships many of our families face even during normal circumstances, their choices are somewhat limited. Funding this project will ensure that students have access to materials with a variety of focuses regardless of their technological access. By providing diverse texts and choices, students are able to improve reading comprehension by selecting texts that are meaningful and engaging to them. Diverse texts offer more options for students to engage in experiences similar to their own experiences and to explore new worlds and experiences outside of their own personal experiences. DONATE HERE Donations of ANY size can make a BIG difference! Two works by Richard Wright, Black Boy and Native Son, are being requested. x YouTube Video And three Toni Morrison books are also on the list: Beloved, The Bluest Eye, and Song of Solomon. This is quite a striking three minutes and change she gives Charlie Rose here; I encourage you to stay until the end. x YouTube Video

Our main project from last week was completed, with plenty of help from our TIP readers! Project #1, Engaging STEM Buckets: Mrs. Christensen teaches elementary school in Davenport, Iowa, and her idea was to place buckets of STEM-related materials on all the tables in her classroom, to encourage her students to work cooperatively with them during break times and come up with ideas together. She writes: Thank you so much for your generous donations! My students were so excited to hear about all of the resources coming the way to them! I am so grateful that you chose my project to donate to and I know it impacts all of my students in the future! Thank you!

DonorsChoose has developed the designation Equity Focus Schools to describe some schools that submit projects. They meet two criteria: at least 50% of students are Black, Latinx, Native American, Pacific Islander, or multiracial, and at least 50% of students qualify for free or reduced price lunch, the standard measure for school economic need. You can read more at the link about their efforts to address the longstanding inequity in education.

Founded in 2009, The Inoculation Project combats the anti-science, anti-education push in conservative America by funding science, math, and literacy projects in red-state public school classrooms and libraries. Our conduit is DonorsChoose, a crowdfunding charity founded in 2000 and highly rated by both Charity Navigator and the Better Business Bureau.

Every Sunday, we focus on helping to fund projects in neighborhood public schools where the overwhelming majority of students come from low-income households. We welcome everyone who supports public school education — no money is required!

Finally, here’s our list of successfully funded projects — our series total is 1006! The success-list diary also contains links and additional information about DonorsChoose.
