Italy shooting: Three women shot dead in Rome cafe

Three women including a friend of Italy's new prime minister were killed when a man opened fire at a cafe in Rome, injuring four other people. Those inside were meeting as part of a local block's residents' committee. Roberto Gualtieri, mayor of Rome, described the shooting as a "grave episode of violence" and said he would attend an emergency meeting on Monday. A suspect, 57, is in custody. He has a history of disputes with some of the committee's board, reports say. Luciana Ciorba, the committee's vice-president, was at the cafe in the Fidene district, Italy's La Repubblica newspaper reports. She said the gunman had entered the bar on Sunday shouting "I'll kill you all" before using his pistol. He was reportedly overpowered by other residents before being detained by police.

A Japanese company has fired a rocket carrying a lunar rover to the moon

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. — A Tokyo company aimed for the moon with its own private lander Sunday, blasting off atop a SpaceX rocket with the United Arab Emirates' first lunar rover and a toylike robot from Japan that's designed to roll around up there in the gray dust. It will take nearly five months for the lander and its experiments to reach the moon. The company ispace designed its craft to use minimal fuel to save money and leave more room for cargo. So it's taking a slow, low-energy path to the moon, flying 1 million miles (1.6 million kilometers) from Earth before looping back and intersecting with the moon by the end of April. By contrast, NASA's Orion crew capsule with test dummies took five days to reach the moon last month. The lunar flyby mission ended Sunday with a Pacific splashdown.

Massachusetts recount flips state house election to Democrat by one vote A recount in a political race in Massachusetts has flipped a state house of representatives election from Republican to Democrat by a single vote. Democrat Kristin Kassner won against her Republican opponent and five-term incumbent Lenny Mirra earlier this week after a recount that shrunk the candidates’ narrow vote deficit to one. The candidates were all vying for a seat based in the North Shore area, which is a coastal region between Boston and New Hampshire. Prior to the recount, Mirra led Kassner by 10 votes out of over 23,000 ballots that were cast in that region during the 8 November midterm election. The 10-vote deficit was within the legal threshold of a recount. On 30 November, Massachusetts secretary of state Bill Galvin ordered hand recounts in a general area where Mirra held a slim advantage. After officials recounted the votes in question Thursday, the results emerged as 11,763 to 11,762

U.S. inflation will be much lower by end of 2023, Yellen says

Dec 11 (Reuters) - U.S. Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen on Sunday forecast a substantial reduction in U.S. inflation in 2023, barring an unexpected shock. "I believe by the end of next year you will see much lower inflation if there's not ... an unanticipated shock," she told CBS' '60 Minutes' in an interview released Sunday. Asked about the likelihood of recession, the former Federal Reserve chair said, "There's a risk of a recession. But ... it certainly isn't, in my view, something that is necessary to bring inflation down." Yellen's comment came days before the Fed is expected to slow the aggressive pace of interest rate increases it has pursued this year. Fed Chair Jerome Powell has telegraphed a smaller, half-of-a-percentage point increase in the policy rate, to a range of 4.25%-4.5%, after four 75-basis point hikes this year. Yellen told CBS that economic growth was slowing substantially, inflation was easing and she remained hopeful that the labor market would remain healthy. Al Jazeera Saudi minister says ‘all bets off’ if Iran gets nuclear weapon Saudi Arabia’s foreign minister has said that Iran’s Gulf Arab neighbours would take measures to shore up their security if Tehran were to obtain nuclear weapons. “If Iran gets an operational nuclear weapon, all bets are off,” Prince Faisal bin Farhan Al Saud said on Sunday in an on-stage interview at the World Policy Conference in Abu Dhabi when asked about such a scenario. The United Nations nuclear chief has voiced concern over a recent announcement by Tehran that it was boosting enrichment capacity. Sunni-ruled Gulf Arab states have pressed for a stronger agreement that addresses their concerns about Shia Iran’s missiles and drones programme and network of regional proxies. “The signs right now are not very positive, unfortunately,” Prince Faisal said.

Search for survivors after Jersey explosion moves to recovery operation - fire service

LONDON (Reuters) - A search and rescue operation after an explosion on the island of Jersey has been moved to a recovery operation, local emergency services said on Sunday, a decision that indicates there may be no more survivors among those who are missing. Three people have been confirmed killed and around a dozen others remain missing after an explosion early on Saturday morning at a block of flats on the island of Jersey, off the coast of northern France. "The search and rescue operation (has) been moved to a recovery operation," Jersey Fire and Rescue said on Twitter. "The number of Islanders confirmed to have been killed in the blast is now 5. There are a number of residents, we're working on the assumption of 4, that are unaccounted for," local police said on Twitter. Jersey is a British Crown Dependency with a resident population of just over 100,000 people.

Storm blankets Sierra Nevada in heavy snow, brings rain across California

A winter storm blanketed the Sierra Nevada in heavy snow and soaked much of California with rain, bringing a wet start of winter after three years of record drought. The storm laid down 3 to 4 feet of fresh snow in parts of the Sierra Nevada over the weekend. From the San Francisco Bay Area to Southern California, between 1 inch and 4 inches of rain fell in many areas. Some parts of the hills and mountains received up to 7 inches of rain over two days, sending water rushing in creeks. The amount of rainfall varied widely across Southern California. Less than an inch of rain fell in downtown Los Angeles, while Pasadena recorded about 3.5 inches and Burbank saw 1.2 inches, according to the National Weather Service. More than 5 inches of rain fell in parts of Ventura and Santa Barbara counties.

‘Pot loves rain’: Annual ganja-rama goes on as planned in Santa Rosa, despite downpour

Old Testament rains lashing the 19th annual Emerald Cup Harvest Ball on Saturday weren’t enough to kill the buzz. True, foul weather depressed ticket sales for the festivities at the Sonoma County Fairgrounds in Santa Rosa. A year ago, this event attracted some 30,000 attendees — a number it is unlikely to approach this weekend. Still, the thousands of pot pilgrims who did show up for this annual celebration of all things cannabis arrived, for the most part, with good rain gear and upbeat attitudes. This weekend’s ganja-rama features more than 100 cannabis vendors, along with panel discussions and performances by musical artists E-40, Channel Tres, Flamingosis and Fleetmac Wood.

Ed note: I drove past the fairgrounds yesterday. In the rain, in the car with windows closed, the pot smell was phenomenal.
