A Black Lesbian Triggers Biden Derangement Syndrome [1]

No matter what you think of Brittney Griner, the anger from some Republicans after she escaped an unjust sentence in a Russian penal colony and is now back home in the United States tells you all you need to know about the sickness that has infected the GOP.
And that sickness is called Biden Derangement Syndrome – an infliction that results in default attacks against President Joe Biden for everything he does, no matter how much good comes out of his actions.
The illness metastasizes another trait found in the party – it doesn’t care about people, except those who can help it, like big donors. It doesn’t even like the white middle-class voters it courts on a daily basis.
Common sense will tell you that a party that doesn’t like most of the people it would govern shouldn’t be in power. And if you think that’s too harsh, let’s look at some of the GOP reaction after the Biden administration was able to swap notorious Russian arms dealer Viktor Bout, who carries the nickname “The Merchant of Death,” for Griner, who was convicted after vape canisters with cannabis oil were found in her possession.
Some Republicans were outspoken that any deal with Russia should have included Paul Whelan, a former Marine who was arrested in Russia several years ago, convicted of alleged espionage, and sentenced to 16 years in prison.
It’s understandable that the GOP, like all of us, would want every American held overseas to be returned home, but in this case the Biden administration said it couldn’t reach a deal with Russia – which you could hardly call a good-faith negotiator – to get both Griner and Whelan.
Still, some Republicans, desperate for another anti-Biden talking point, went as far as disparaging Griner, making it sound like Whelan was more worthy of release.
For instance, House Leader Kevin McCarthy took a minute from prostrating himself before the insanity wing of his caucus in hopes of being elected Speaker to say, “This is a gift to Vladimir Putin, and it endangers American lives. Leaving Paul Whelan behind for this is unconscionable.”
“This”? Is that how he sees Griner? If so there’s no reason to be surprised. Griner is a kind of gift to the GOP in its ongoing race and culture wars that it thinks will help it win elections.
Griner is an African American lesbian who has participated in protests over police brutality. She’s someone Republicans can hold up before the white nationalists, anti-LGBTQ+ zealots, and racists in their base. They see her as another wedge issue to divide us. Like so many of us, she’s nothing more than a political pawn in their quest for power. Do they even see her as a human being?
To be fair, some Republicans did comment appropriately on Griner’s release. You can read about GOP reaction in this piece from the Huffpost.
It's interesting to contrast Republican outrage with Whelan’s own brother, David, who said in a statement that while he was disappointed for his family, he did not fault officials for making the deal.
“The Biden administration made the right decision to bring Ms. Griner home, and to make the deal that was possible, rather than waiting for one that wasn’t going to happen,” he said.
The Griner story serves as another example of the cruelty that we see coming from the Republican Party on a regular basis. This is a bunch that sees everything through the lens of hating the current president. No lie is too big to tell. No person worth sparing from their attacks.
Biden Derangement Syndrome is a sickness that has no cure and no recourse other than doing everything possible to keep the party of hate from the power they most certainly will misuse to their benefit and to the misfortune of most of the rest of us.
