I’m so happy that Rev. Senator Warnock won the runoff, and I hope that my letters to voters counted for a few of those votes. Or, I hope they weren’t even needed. But it is mind boggling that the runoff was needed, and that the vote was even close. Why couldn’t Georgia Republicans see what everyone else in the country (and even the Georgia Lieutenant Governor ) saw, that Herschel Walker was an embarrassment of a candidate?
This is all part of the Republicans’ incredible, outrageous, cynical strategy. Have you noticed who they come up with for candidates? They try to find the Republican version of the incumbent Democrat — Senator Warnock’s a Black guy, so they find a Black guy to run against him. And since no self-respecting, progress-minded Black man would even consider running against Warnock (why would they?), they found Herschel Walker. In Michigan there is a white woman governor (Gretchen Whitmer) and a Black lieutenant governor (Garland Gilchrist), and so the Republicans came up with a white woman candidate for governor and a Latino man for lieutenant governor. They lost.
Of course, Herschel had that football advantage. (Like Tommy Tuberville in Alabama against Doug Jones.) Did the Republicans really think that Walker could steal Black votes from Warnock because of a football? I guess they thought that. But how does an ignorant (or a damaged, brain-addled) Black Republican win white votes? It must be the stupidity (or brain damage) that was the appeal. It was obvious that Walker would never make a decision, let alone a coherent sentence, in the Senate, but he would do whatever McConnell and other Republicans told him to do. And that must have really been appealing to the white bigot Republicans in Georgia.
Thank goodness enough intelligent, progressive people came out and voted in Georgia and defeated that repugnant Republican strategy, and their disgusting yet pitiful candidate.
