Red-shouldered Hawk; the only wildlife photographed at the pond this day.

DEC. 6, 2022

Having a break in the weather between storms, I pedaled over to Dellinger’s Pond for a look-see. Since I haven’t reported from the pond in quite a while, I figure it’s time.

The Daily Bucket is a nature refuge. We amicably discuss animals, weather, climate, soil, plants, waters and note life’s patterns. We invite you to note what you are seeing around you in your own part of the world, and to share your observations in the comments below. Each note is a record that we can refer to in the future as we try to understand the phenological patterns that are quietly unwinding around us. With very overcast skies, no wind, and temperature at 39f, I arrived at the pond after waiting through the morning for a couple of hours for either the temperature to rise further or the overcast to break. Neither much seemed promising, but by the time I got to the pond it did appear that at least a “sucker hole” was showing.

Yeah, a bit of blue sky. Shucks, I’ll take it. But nothing on the pond. Notice it looks rather frozen over, but it’s more slush than ice. Regardless, no birds.

Compare with my last from the pond, back in November:

Icy, but not as much water fill.

Gazing all the way down to the other end of the pond through my camera lens, there’s a dead pine that often has something, bird-wise, in it. Well, well, well.

This is a free-hand shot; I didn’t bother setting my tripod for this long a distance at any rate. But… there’s the possibility that I can pedal around the pond on the highway and get a closer shot.

Not really even worth cropping in.

The trees around the highway side of the pond had me worried that I wouldn’t be able to see the hawk at any closer vantage point. But a gap opened and I got the one shot.

Most memorable photographs from the pond this year (but don’t forget, there’s still some days left in 2022, heh heh):

Great Blue Heron and Raccoon

Really big pile of bear poop. Glove shown for scale. I was leery walking in to the pond this day.

Cedar Waxwing

Gray Fox

Bullock’s Oriole, first-summer male

Black-crowned Night Heron

Green Heron

Kinda nice to have a place like this in my “backyard”, as it were.

Now It's Your Turn.

What have you noted happening in your area or travels? As usual post your observations as well as their general location in the comments.

Thank you.
