Dear Gnusville,
The usual team may be having a little difficulty today — so here are a few stories to keep you smiling. Please, bring your own as well!
🌵 ARIZONA RESULTS CERTIFIED Stacey Barchenger, Mary Jo Pitzl Arizona Republic
Secretary of State and Gov.-elect Katie Hobbs officially certified the Nov. 8 election results in a ceremony at the Capitol on Monday morning, a routine step in the election process and one that clears the way for lawsuits and recounts in three races to begin. Seated alongside Gov. Doug Ducey, Attorney General Mark Brnovich and Arizona Supreme Court Chief Justice Robert Brutinel, whose signatures also were required on the certification documents, Hobbs thanked the about 2.6 million voters who cast ballots this year. "I just want to once again thank the voters of Arizona, because of your participation our democratic institutions thrived," Hobbs said. "Stay engaged and keep voting."
🐻 CALIFORNIA (NEWSOM) PROPOSES MEASURE TO PUNISH PRICE GOUGING KABC7
SACRAMENTO, Calif. (KABC) -- Gov. Gavin Newsom on Monday proposed a measure to crack down on price gouging by oil companies, and impose penalties on excessive profits that would be refunded to Californians. Newsom's proposal would allow the state to determine an allowable profit margin by oil companies operating in California. Those that exceed the margins would face an equivalent penalty and those fines would be returned to residents of the state. The proposal, which needs legislative approval, comes not long after gas prices hit record levels in California and throughout the country.
LONDON PLANS TO EXPAND POLLUTION-FEE AREA Brett Wilkins, Common Dreams via EcoWatch
Starting next August, drivers of the most polluting vehicles will have to pay $15 per day to enter an Ultra-Low Emissions Zone expanded to include all of metropolitan London, the British capital’s mayor announced Friday. “Cleaner air is coming to Outer London,” Mayor Sadiq Khan tweeted. “Today I’m announcing that we’re expanding the #ULEZ London-wide in a move that will bring cleaner air to five million more Londoners.” “Our city is being smothered by toxic air—and it’s hurting and killing Londoners, leading to asthma, dementia, and even cancer,” the mayor continued. “Air pollution particles have even been found in the livers and brains of unborn babies. We cannot stand idly by and allow this to continue.”
EMPLOYMENT MUCH BETTER!
x When President Biden took office, over 18 million Americans were receiving unemployment benefits.

ITALY POKES THE BEAR WHILE IT’S DOWN
x Giorgia Meloni’s new government has decided to nationalize the Russian-owned ISAB oil refinery in Sicily.
The Lukoil refinery is one of Europe’s largest and provides Italy with 20% of its oil products.

Note that Meloni is a bit of a fascist, so this is surprising. And maybe she intends to nationalize other non-Russian companies, and is simply starting with the easiest bit.
GOP MAJORITY LOOKS FLIMSY Jake Lahut, The Daly Beast
Left in the wake of the countervailing forces that made the 2022 midterms so unusual are 18 GOP House seats set to become the new battleground in 2024. And as if New York didn’t have enough influence over the country, a handful of flipped seats there could once again make the difference between Democratic and Republican control of the House. Known as crossover seats, what these 18 all have in common is a Republican victor who prevailed in a district that President Joe Biden won in 2020. On the Democratic side, there are five members who pulled off a victory in a district former President Donald Trump carried in his 2020 defeat.
The battle for 2024 has begun!
🍑 Even though the battle for 2022 is still going on in the peach state. Go, Warnock, go!

Note whether published or not, I am not around today. And if there are two GNR diaries, well, sorry, I cannot do anything about it. 🌻 💙 🌻
🐦 I do a lot of other writing. A recent offering: Hunters of the Feather, a story about a thinker-linker crow who wants to save birdkind from extinction, and the sequel, Scavengers of Mind. (They’re really good! They’re really cheap! Buy and review or rate positively! And Hunters is also available on Audible!) Other stories, based on Jane Austen novels — including a new one for lovers of Pride & Prejudice, Mrs. Bennet’s Advice to Young Ladies — and others on Greek mythology, can be found here. All titles are available through Kindle Unlimited, but I only get paid if you turn the pages.
