Democrats Can Elect the New Speaker of the House [1]

Retiring Michigan GOP Congressman Fred Upton

When the new Congress is sworn in a roll call vote is held to elect the new Speaker. This is not an electronic vote, because they have to abstain, vote present, or vote for a person.

Present vote count in new Congress is 221-213 (2 still not decided, I guess), an 8 vote margin for GOP. Since a couple of Freedom Caucus members insist they will NOT vote for Kevin, his margin is smaller, six at the most.

213 Democrats will vote for whoever the caucus decides by majority. Pretty sure it will NOT be McCarthy. McCarthy appears to be unloved by all, and at the same time beholden to many.

So let’s say McCarthy loses 2 Wingers, now he’s down to 219. Assuming all present and no abstentions, he would need 218 to win.

Now, if just TWO Republican Congressmen vote for someone other than McCarthy, someone like Ken Upton could be elected Speaker … . It’s been floated, and was discussed in WaPo by Aaron Blake, 12-2-22, “Who Could Be Speaker, if not Kevin McCarthy?”

It’s been over a century since there was a floor fight for Speaker. this could be really great political fun.
