Rusty Bowers, the Arizona House speaker, told the Jan. 6 committee under oath this summer that Giuliani was never able to provide any proof or evidence to support the fraud claims peddled by Trump.
“He said, ‘we’ve got lots of theories, we just don’t have the evidence,’” Bowers recalled the former New York City mayor saying during a meeting in the weeks before the insurrection at the Capitol.
The disciplinary hearing now underway is led by the Board on Professional Responsibility. Giuliani is testifying on his own behalf.
According to reporting by CNN, Giuliani initially “signaled interest” in bringing witnesses forward who could discuss the “fraud” he claims to have witnessed in the 2020 election. But on the advice of those individuals’ own lawyers, they opted against joining Giuliani for his latest descent down the rabbit hole.
The hearing will take several days and is presented in a trial format. Once the hearing is over, a report will be issued with recommendations that will go to a court of appeals in Washington, D.C.
A representative for Giuliani could not immediately be reached for comment Monday.
It was only last month that Giuliani managed to evade criminal charges tied to a grand jury probe in New York scrutinizing his potential violations of U.S. lobbying laws when he was in Ukraine angling to dig up political dirt on Joe Biden.
The Big Lie peddler is still facing a criminal probe led by a grand jury in Georgia that is exploring former President Donald Trump’s attempt to overturn his defeat in that state.
