Good morning, Crew. Today’s Morning Open Thread features some songs by the fascinating Nina Simone. But first

Morning Open Thread is a daily, copyrighted post from a host of editors and guest writers. We support our community, invite and share ideas, and encourage thoughtful, respectful dialogue in an open forum.

The phenomenal Nina Simone was born in 1933 to a poor North Carolina family. She took up piano when she was a very young girl. Some community members spotted her early talent so they chipped in and paid her tuition at the Julliard School. Ms Simone dreamed of attending Philadelphia’s Curtis Institute of Music but, although she performed well in her audition, she got word that she was refused admission because she was a Black person.

Needless to say, Ms Simone was angered by the injustices intrinsic to being an African American during the Jim Crow era. Ans who among us wouldn’t be? After the 1963 assassination of Medgar Evers she released the hit “Mississippi Goddamn.” It’s release got her music banned by many radio stations. Later she admitted the song hurt her career. She was active in the Black Nationalist movement along with her friend and neighbor Malcolm X. She also got into a bit of trouble with the IRS when she refused to pay her taxes in protest of the Vietnam War. Such actions probably held back her popularity despite her vast talent.

Later in her life, Ms Simone was diagnosed as bipolar. (I’m bipolar, too, btw.) I think that contributed to her quick temper and possibly to a few of her career missteps. Yet, altogether, she was one of the heroes of the Civil Rights movement.

This is an open thread.
