The gang's all here.

Please Read This

There are over 60 editorial cartoons and other Tweets in this diary. The topics include Trump’s controversial dinner guests at Mar-a-Lago for which he has, along with his apologists in the Republican Party, yet to apologize; Anne Telnaes’ wonderful sketches in support of editorial cartoonists everywhere in the world; a blatant display of sexism by a journalist at a news conference by the female Prime Ministers of New Zealand and Finland; the guilty verdicts for Trump’s pals, the Oathkeepers, who can expect lengthy sentences for their serious crimes; the growing protests in China, handled in the usual authoritarian way by the Chinese Communists Party; and a wonderful monologue by legendary comedian George Carlin.

In the comments section, I will post at least another 15-20 cartoons on a number of other topics including Russia, the World Cup, the proliferation of guns, and Twitter’s implosion and uncertain future.

Finally, the US Senate Runoff Election in Georgia is on Tuesday, December 6th. Please support Reverend Raphael Warnock (D-GA) and help him get re-elected in any way you can. If you live in Georgia, remember to vote on Tuesday. Thanks.

Why Democracies Need Editorial Cartoonists

Editorial cartoonists evoke a wide range of emotions — laughter, anger, outrage, remorse, disgust, surprise, irony, fear, and sadness, to name a few. They capture the absurdity of domestic politics better than thousands of written words by op-ed columnists and editors of the most influential newspapers or endless opinions by talking heads on cable television. In a single frame, cartoonists often get to the heart of the matter and depict through their drawings the human limitations of politicians or the flawed policies they espouse.

In a brilliant series of cartoons — with some help from her colleagues — Ann Telnaes of the Washington Post tells us in graphic detail why the world’s democracies could use more, not less, editorial cartoonists. Politicians may try to create their own facts and blatantly lie, but cartoonists can hold their feet to the fire in ways that are universally understood and appreciated.

The Mar-a-Lago Dinner Guests

Republicans Are Paying for Trump’s Dinner William Saletan: “When Trump crosses a moral line, Republicans find ways to excuse him, deflect the criticism, and move on. Maybe they imagine that our moral boundaries will hold—that racism and antisemitism will remain unacceptable—even when a current, former, and potentially future president is shielded from accountability for ignoring those boundaries.” “But no true conservative would make that bet.” x Cartoon pic.twitter.com/v3Q4cAGT1m — Bill Bramhall (@BillBramhall) November 28, 2022

Diary Poll

Remember to take the diary poll. Is there any connection between this verdict and eventually charging Trump for his Jan 6th role?
