The Russians are appalling in every way.
The leaders, the soldiers, the people who support this vile war.
I was prompted to write this diary by Mark’s latest fantastic update which had this awful line: “I am not going to show you the video of shelter dogs killed by Russian shelling. I’m just not.”
The very thought of it is horrific.
I follow the war coverage closely in a host of reputable media outlets as well as social media and it is painful and disturbing and so very sad.
My heart goes out to the magnificent people of Ukraine.
And as an animal lover and activist, my heart breaks too for the non-human victims as well of the Russian war.
I have seen many instances of animal deaths and those of the brave human souls trying to save them.
It's clear the Russians are targeting animals deliberately.
From The Atlantic: But in this war, animals have become Russian targets for no purpose other than sheer cruelty. Ukraine’s government has accused the Russian military of intentionally striking dog shelters and horse stables. Russian soldiers in retreat from the Kyiv region left behind the bullet-riddled corpses of not just cattle, horses, and goats, but even pet dogs. By killing animals, the invaders seem to be responding to all the pictures of Ukrainians with pets in bomb shelters and evacuation convoys. The Russians have identified yet another way to inflict pain on the Ukrainian people—not by starving them but by breaking their heart.
The Daily Mail:
Hundreds of dogs have been found dead at an animal shelter in Ukraine after Russian occupiers left them to starve in their cages for weeks.
Volunteer group UAnimals said that up to 485 dogs were locked in their cages at a shelter in Borodyanka, just north of Kyiv, by Russian forces shortly after the invasion of Ukraine began on February 24.
There they remained without food or water for about a month as the occupiers left them to die, until staff were able to return to the compound on April 1 once the Russian soldiers had retreated.
Newsweek:
"Killing is entertainment for them," said a tweet on Monday from the Ukraine Ministry of Defense, accompanied with photos of dead animals at a site allegedly abandoned by Russian soldiers. "When the occupiers are unable to torture & kill civilians, they do it to animals."
Reported among the animals was a rare gray dwarf hamster, said by the Ministry to be listed in the Red Book of Ukraine—an official national list of threatened animals, plants and fungi protected by law in Ukraine.
The Kyiv Independent: Russian soldiers murder volunteers helping starving animals near Kyiv.
I could go on and on and on.
So many examples, all so distressing.
I hope the Russians all get what is coming to them and they get it good and hard.
Every single one of them.
